Just a note to add to the recent reply.

Absent Voters lists for the town may be held in the Local History section of the library( as they are in my locale)  or in the local archives.

If your not local a google search for them and a quick email may help your search.

I've transcribed my local Absent Voters and part of the Roll of Honour - someone may have done this or even put some of the info on a web site

Coroners reports

A good source are local newspapers, but the local Archives will have them in certain cases.

My local archives only has them since 1940.

The local coroners office could also be a contact point but they keep only a few ( from my experience locally)

If all else fails - the newspapers are certain to come up trumps

I would first try the local papers, you would be surprised how much detail could be involved in one article.

Criminal records are closed for 100 years but there may be other information available for open access at the local archives or library.

But give the papers a try first - with being an estate agent, auctioneer etc., he would have had some standing in the area and as we know, someone having bad luck sells more papers than someones good luck !!

I hope you have good luck when looking for him

One of my lot died in the Pauper Lunatic Asylum, just up the road and she was laid to rest in the All Saints Burial Ground which was nestled between The Springs, Vicarage Street and Zetland St, Wakefield.  A search on www.multimap.co.uk for any of these streets will show you the area.

The graveyard was dismantled, for want of a better word, in the early middle 1900's - my dad can remember then doing it and making way for 'new' shops on the Springs.  The original vicarage is still there.  It used to be the conservative club, but that went belly up in the 1990's and is now divided into seperate shops,

The building was in the news not long ago as they found old tunnels etc.

Hope this little background info helps

Yes you were given the correct churches but these would not have been around when your John died, escept Stanley.
The churches that were in the town and surrounding areas were -

All Saints with its burial ground a stones throw from Eastmoor.

St John's   beyond All Saints and I don't think an option

or

St Jame's near the park.

or Stanley St Peter as you already know, but this is further away than any of the others

I personally would start with the All Saints.  The registers will be with the archives or on film at the library, but if you are not local try your nearest LDS and they will surely get the films/ fiche for you

Happy hunting

Hi Geoff,

Thanks for your musings - researching in a differant county is just like researching on the moon, place names and distances mean nothing.

Yes I had the marriage on the IGI and came to the same conclusion as you - Hannah is Ann as all the dates fit.

The 1841 is the right family as children and dates also fit.

Also, thanks for looking in the '41.

Do you know if the LDS have filmed or fiched PR's as I think an evening out is called for.

Thanks again

Hi Mary,

regarding you running two computers with your family tree on.

I've the normal pc and a laptop that I take to my cousins and share info.

I find it quite simple to keep them both up to date - I do a gedcom each time I update info.  Keeping the main gedcom on the pc and copying that  to a floppy or 'stick' to put on the laptop and then visa versa.  Gedcom from the laptop and save on disc or 'stick'.

Easy when you've done it a couple of times.

I've just been doing my cousins husbands line and had one programme open with 3 databases open at the same time and today must have done more gedcoms and backups  than enough just to make sure that when I imported/ copied/ or included info, I still had a true family tree.

Woh  betied anyone that interupts when this is happening - but who said doing your family tree was easy and it certainly is not boring.

You probably do this anyway, but just incase

regards

Carol

Looked up Gibraltar in the Post Office directory and found one near Aylesbury, but the fact that there is one in Lincolnshire adds more credence to the fact that at every census he changes his place of birth on each census.

I've always been cautious about place names sounding 'foreign'  i.e. Hollywood nr Birmingham and Stone ; Dallas in Morayshire  the list goes on.

Thanks again for the info it is much appreciated

Carol :)

Thanks,

I've scoured the census and drawn a blank, my only excuse is that I was relying on a computer based search

--- well thats my excuse,

It dosn't help when every census they change their place of birth

thanks again
