Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1934/5 Round the World trip
« on: Tuesday 12 February 19 23:12 GMT (UK)  »
In 1934-5 my mother, then 17, with her 19 yr old sister, were taken by their parents from London via Gibraltar, toulon, Naples, Suez, Aden, Colombo, Penang, KL,  Singapre and Batavia to Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA before sailing back to Britain. My mother kept a pocket diary, I would be very grateful for a transcription, please ?  I've had a go at the beginning :-

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: what is the day?

From the "close-ups"I would say without hesitation that it's 9th changed to 10th.

I am really curious about the oval 'thing' near his feet below the shrub. Can anyone work out what it is?
Here's an "enlargement" cropped from the 14Mb hi-res bitmap.

I had thought it was Canon Feilden; but now I don't think it is...

... and here he is, Page 50.  Who is he ?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Cartes de Visite Album, Page 50
« on: Monday 28 April 14 23:14 BST (UK)  »
My grandmother's grandmother was Martha Hammond Thornewill (of Burton-o[-Trent) nee Wright (of Eyam).  I have her album of some 150 Cartes de Visite, with not very many of them identified.    I have scanned the empty pages, and front & back of each card.

This is the last page, Page 50.  It holds only one picture, and, despite the SubjectLine, it is actually a "Cabinet Card", rather than a Carte de Visite.

The photograph is of an elderly man; his garb suggests to me that he might be a priest - what do you think ?

And can you hazard a guess as to his age ?  And the date of the picture ?  Given those, we get an approximate date of birth, which just might enable me to identify the subject !  Information about the Studio would be of interest, too.

I'm posting the lo-res versions, so please don't bother to try to improve them.

I am gathering the comments to store in a file alongside the pictures, and, when finished, it will be quite a task to analyse them all and draw deductions as to the identity of some currently unknown.

...and here (49D) is whom I believe to be her second son, Robert Thornewill, my grandmother's father, born 30 Oct. 1843.

How old is he here / when was the photograph taken?
