Lanarkshire / Wilson from Glasgow
« on: Sunday 14 November 10 23:12 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for info on a family Wilson in Glasgow circa 1850. Benjamin Wilson and Christina Wilson. They had in their care a Robert Carruthers 15 and a Caroline Carruthers 5 in the 1851 census. Christina is the sister of a Pringle Hannan. I have been researching this lady but since finding out about Christina I thought that getting info on her may fill in gaps about Pringle  2 of pringles chidren were being raised by her sister as Pringle had died.Benjamin was a gas fitter and they had a son Alexander 2 months. There may be info about Christina and Pringles parents through research on Christina as there is very little in regards to Pringle herself. It appears she died sometime in the 1840s Thanks Hereford

Also does anyone know the meaning of it. I cannot find it on any name sites.I am thinking it could be a very old Celtic name and has an old history with it.I saw on a pronunciation site it is said mouan Hereford

Scotland / Carruthers mystery
« on: Tuesday 27 April 10 03:36 BST (UK)  »
I am researching the Carruthers family 1800s . I know where they lived so it is not for a specific county. Would someone be able to give me the name of someone who is a Historian on the history of the textile industry in Scotland in the 1800s.and maybe has access to  old employment records My  G G G Grandfather was a combmaker and I believe he was involved in the textile industry as one of his sons was a cloth lapper. This man went between Glasgow and Edinburgh with his family as his children were born in Edinburgh and Glasgow. I am assuming it was with regards to his work.  I need to know if there is a record of this mans profession regarding combmaking as he is noted as a storekeeper on his daughter Marys death cert. Also is there any reference to his young daughter being employed as well in the textile industry as on her wedding cert she could not write her name so she was obviously not educated and she was not recorded boarding with her 5 yr old sister and 15 yr old Brother in the 1851 census that's not to say that she wasn't there just no record of her and she was only 8 . His name is William Carruthers and her name is Mary Ann Mckenzie Carruthers. Thanks for any help Hereford

Lanarkshire / Comb maker
« on: Friday 23 April 10 23:03 BST (UK)  »
Looking for info about William Carruthers who was a comb maker. On his daughters Death cert it has Glasgow as a place of residence and her fathers profession as a shopkeeper. On William carruthers marriage cert it has his profession stated as comb maker and also that profession is noted when his children were born as well. The family started out in Edinburgh . He was married in 1832 to a Pringle Hannan. According to records they had 4 boys and 1 girl my G G Grandmother.  I am assuming that they moved to Glasgow  It states Glasgow on his Daughters death cert as her birth place of  but it was actually Edinburgh which is why I think they may have moved to Glasgow when she was little. But I could be wrong on this one.So I am grasping at straws here very little info to go on. But I thought if Glasgow was a place they lived in perhaps there is a business record for William Somewhere.Glasgow may be completely wrong as I have discovered on other searches  for other peopleThanks    Hereford

Hope someone can help Hunting for  shipping info on a Mary Ann Carruthers  who married william kay kemp in Lawrence . Now I have found out she was born in Edinburgh circa 1843. I am going round in circles at the moment as I have a record of her  birth and her parents marriage in Scotland but there a trip runs cold.I am trying to find out when they came to NZ or if it was just Mary ann herself. If there is a shiping record in NZ for this family then the mother is Pringle Carruthers and the father William Carruthers. It has been suggested to me that they may have gone to Australia first. So will post on Aussie site  Can someone point me in the right direction. H

Researching the Carruthers family from Edinburgh. I am from NZ and have just recieved the death cert of my great great grandmother.Mary Ann Mckenzie Carruthers she married a kemp in NZ in 1864.Trying to resarch her family more. Her father was William Carruthers and her Mother Pringle Carruthers nee Hannan. Mary was born cannongate old church parish 1843 Her Father was a comb maker. On her death cert it states he was a shop keeper and was wondering if perhaps they moved to Glasgow and had shop there.as it states Galsgow as birth place. A brother william born 10 years earlier same cannongate area. Pringle I am assuming is a family name  but that is the name of her mother on her birth record and death printout.Pringle married william Carruthers 1832 st Cuthberts Edinburgh.Tying to see if the whole family came out or just her as a servant Also where would I go to find a record of a shopkeeper?  Hereford

Antrim / Hunting for mary
« on: Saturday 13 March 10 08:12 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find a person named Mary Priscilla Turner Born 1886 to Rev Thomas Edward Turner and his wife Abigail This is a missing piece of the puzzle The story my father was told was that his fathers 2 half sisters left Ireland for the states and were never heard of again I have only a record of  one sister. A roots chat member sent me a reply stating that on a death notice for Abigail Turner a baby by the same name died at the same time. I have found marys birth notice but need to send for the certificate. But I am thinking that there was only one daughter born to abigail I suspect the second baby died as Abigail was only 25 when she died.  If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great thanks Hereford.
