Thankyou for that HeartyR,

That means Robert if it's him would have been 10 years old when it was sold & if it was Joseph he would have been in between 46 & 56 when the photo was taken ???
Now i'm more confused than I was before

OK.. I hope someone may be able to help &  I don't know where to put this question, I have an old photo, my father who has since died thought it was his father Robert Bartram who was born 1896 Middlesex. He said he thought he was a boy sailor, in the photo he would have been about 16years which would have brought us to about 1912. then I have another photo ( they do look similar) (this time I know it is him) during WW1 but in army uniform ( i would have thought he would have served in the navy or marines)
On the other hand I have found out that Robert's father Joseph Bartram (Bertram) born 1855 middlesex was in the workhouse aged 6 years old  in Berwick upon Tweed & 1871 census he is a ships boy staying with his sister in London.
I need help firstly from the photo can anyone tell what year the uniform might be his hat does say Formidable & 2 can anyone tell me what regiment the uniform belongs to in the army photo.

My great uncle's name was George Henry Bartram, He served under the name of G H Dudney (his aunts married name was Dewdney) he is commemorated on  the commonwealth war graves commission (la ferte-sous-jouarre memorial) His death cert is in the name of Dudney (it says 3rd btn the rifle brigade) army no 1133 (missing presumed dead) he was 27yrs old. it made me so sad, what a shock I got, 25th sept (my birthday)

I had a great uncle who served ww1 under an alias (similar to his aunts married name) I found him on the rolls of honour. his death certificate is in the alias name.. on the rolls of honour it says that he served under an alias & gives his real name. he wasn't under age. so it makes me wonder what he was running away from. & what a shame, He was killed in france 25/9/1918. his body never found

Hi Barbara,
My Bartram's are in Berwick Upon-Tweed 1802 Marriage: Joseph Bartram & Barbara Ferguison : children so far Joseph 1805, Ann 1808, John 1809, & Charles 1811(my ggg grandfather) who married in Stepney London 1837..haven't got any of the certificates for the northumberland dates to give more info, Although I do know that Charles was a "sail maker " & I don't know yet whether the whole family moved from up there to down here.. There's not a lot on line pre 1837..They do seem to have kept the same spelling though
