Kent Lookup Requests / Re: GARRETTs in Woolwich in the late 1700s

Robert Surman Garrett owned the drapers at 68 Powis St (Kent House) from about 1879 - it was not in Garrett hands prior to then.  Garrett rebuilt the shop (68 - 86) to become a hige department store.  I remember Garrett's in Woolwich and its rival, Cuff (88 - 104).  Google Survey of London, Woolwich (English Heritage/Historic England).

Kent Lookup Requests / Inhabitants of Lessness Heights/House, Belvedere/Lessness/Erith
« on: Saturday 26 September 15 21:41 BST (UK)  »
A house called, firstly Lessness Heights and then Lessness House used to exist at the end of what is now Priory Close in Belvedere (formerly Lessness).  I have the names of the families living there in each of the censuses going back to 1871.  A couple of servants were there in 1861, so presumably the family were elsewhere on census night.  Few houses are identified by name in the 1851 census.

The house is named on a map of 1860, but it is unknown how long before that date it was built.  It was substantial, with a ball room.

It would be great if anyone can look up directories, tax records and suchlike that may indicate who lived there in 1860-ish and earlier.

Thank you.

Deborah

My request is related to this:  http://www.tidelineart.com/tideline-art-blog

I helped with the research.  Nicola has been approached by someone from the BBC.  It would be great if we could find descendants to complete the story.  Frederick Jury has no direct descendants, but he had two stepsons: Augustus James Carter and William Carter.  Augustus has been a little easier to follow because of his first name.  He and his family were with Fred and Sarah throughout the 1920s.  Augustus had two (surviving) children through his first wife, Cecilia Lush: Bertie Augustus and Winifred.  His second wife was also Winifred.  Augustus was a carpenter and sometimes was away from his family.

That's it.  Thanks so much.  I'll have to fire up a computer and see if it makes a difference.

Out of interest, what details did you type in and under which category?

Thanks Cathy,

That's where I found him, but he is not appearing now.  The 1911 Census and 11 electoral registrations, but not the 1907 one.  I wonder whether it is to do with searching using an iPad.  It's driving me bonkers!

A few weeks ago I found that, in 1907, Augustus James Carter was renting three rooms at 32 Wernbrook Street, Plumstead.  I'm blowed if I can find the record now.  I would be grateful if a mind Rootschatter could have a look.

Thank you.

Thanks for that.  Would you mind if I quoted you in our school archive and possibly the website?
