The Lighter Side / Re: Divorce in the 1800s?

You are forgetting the 7 year rule.

This comes in two forms -
1) If a couple have been apart for seven years and one of the couple has been beyond the seas for that time they are free to marry whether there is knowledge of the partner being alive or not.

2) If a couple have been apart for seven years and there is no knowledge that the missing partner is alive. The remaining partner is free to marry. (24 & 25 Vict. c. 100, s.57)

Technical Help / Re: Unable to instal London Post Office Directories 1856 and 1902
« on: Wednesday 20 April 05 19:03 BST (UK)  »
Such cds from Archive CD Books and other similar companies which scan books to cd do not require installing.
They come as simple PDF files which are opened by the free reader Adobe Acrobat, this may be downloaded from
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
if you do not already have a copy on your computer.
The latest version is 7 and it is recommended that one uses version 4 or above to read the cds.

Technical Help / Re: I Have outgrown my computer
« on: Wednesday 20 April 05 17:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi celia sorry for the confusion I caused,

There are two main upgrade paths you could choose
1 is to fit a CD Writer (this will create your CD's with appropriate software)
2 is to fit a DVD writer (This will create your CD's OR DVD's with the appropriate software)

You need to ask yourself if you need the storage capacity of a DVD ..... unless you are storing large quantities of video files or very high quality picture files I would suspect the answer is NO ...
to put it into context 1 CD is equivalent to approx 450 Floppy discs and 1 DVD Disc is the equivalent of 7 CD's

A suitable internal CD writer drive can be obtained for as little as £17
http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/components/cdanddvdreaderswriters/

fitting it is relatively straightforward if you have no qualms about opening up your machine's case ..... If you do try to get someone else to fit it for you.

Another option is to go for an external unit which would plug into your system and be available without opening the case ....... this is a much more expensive option £70 - £100.

Regarding the CD types ...... the CD Writer can write to two types of CD

type 1 is a one off operation .... ie you Create (burn) the CD and the information is put on the CD in one operation ....

type 2 is what is referred to as CD RW ..... these disks can be written to several times adding a litlle information each time so that all of the information is available to the person viewing the contents

Sorry slight correction. Both types of CD will allow data to be added until the CD is full as long as the cd has not been finalized.
The benefit of a cdrw disk is that you can erase the cd and start again the same as you can with a floppy disc.

Technical Help / Re: Can't install BVRI2
« on: Wednesday 20 April 05 17:29 BST (UK)  »
I started with no versions of the viewer and no versions of BVRI on my pc.

I got a BVRI2 which contains a version3 viewer disc and a viewer update patch on the first data disc.

I am not trying to install a newer version over an old, I'm just trying to install what's in the pack so that I can run BVRI2.

I install the version 3 viewer, then when I try to load the data, it says I must install the patch to bring the viewer up to version 4. When I try to do this, it fails.

(Sorry, it's late and I'm a bit stressed)

I think there are, or were, known problems with BVRI2 running under Windows xp, because when I Google these, I find references to problems, but can't as yet find any solutions offerred.

To run BIVRI2 you must have Viewer 4 the update on disk 1 of the data disks updates from Viewer 4 to Viewer 4.02.
There is no way the Viewer 3 will be updated by using the patch.

Viewer 3 came with the Mormon Immigration Disk and the Western Europe Vital Records set not with the BIVRI 2nd edition.

Site update

I have added some bastardy bond transcripts to my Framland website at
http://freespace.virgin.net/guy.etchells/

The transcripts on this site now include baptisms, marriages, burials, monumental inscriptions, census, newspaper extracts, strays, images and photos of churches & tombstones and a myriad of other subjects including Acts of Parliament and a 12th century survey.

The site that gives you facts not promises.
