Lancashire / Re: Garston Liverpool
« on: Sunday 14 March 10 18:26 GMT (UK)  »
My son and I have just driven back from Liverpool (avoiding the bridge) and I  noticed the official sign saying "Garston" is opposite the Cricket Club. I quite agree with Garstonite about Grassendale and Cressington, having been brought up to say I lived in Grassendale, claytonbradley

I still have a query about the John Chadwick born 1803. I was hoping spendlove or mort29 could help me. Is it all right to carry on in this thread?
I found John Chadwick in 1851 in Manchester aged 47 a Pensioner born Belper, wife Elizabeth 51 b Clifton Derbyshire with John Taylor grandson and Samuel Birch nephew HO107 2226 227 27
1861 Gorton John Chadwick 58 mechanic b Milford Elizabeth 61 Clifton Somerset Amelia ?Birch nurse child 4m b Longsight
1871 John Chadwick in Belper married inmate Chelsea Pensioner
RG10 3584 66 3
1881 Elizabeth Chadwick widow 81 born Clifton, Derbyshire.
John Chadwick appears in the website belper-reasearch as a Chelsea Pensioner. John Chadwick 54th foot regiment age at discharge 41 1828-44.
There is a marriage of a John Chadwick to Elizabeth Birch at Duffield in 1826, but is it this couple? The grandchild John Taylor, according to a tree on Ancestry is the son of Henry Taylor and Selina Birch, so is Selina the daughter of Elizabeth Chadwick, illegitimate or by a former marriage? The Samuel Birch, nephew appears to be the son of Joseph and Phillis (Philadelphia) Birch in Belper in 1841. They died and their other children died. So Joseph should be Elizabeth Chadwick's brother, but in 1841 he says not born in county whereas she always says Clifton. I think John Chadwick was bap 3 jun 1803 son of William and Ellen, but I'd like to know more about Elizabeth. Many thanks, claytonbradley

The lady who runs the belper-research site has started a new forum. It might be worth your posting on there? claytonbradley

I have been through the censuses again, but got no further. It seems pretty clear that it was Matthew's son who became the Methodist minister. I looked at the John Chadwick, visitor age 22 widower mechanic in Notts with John Hodges hosiers' warehouseman in 1851. In 1841 John Hodges was in Belper 25 framework hosier wife Ann 35 son Thomas 6 Harriet 8m. I was trying to find the maiden name of Ann, who died before 1851 when John Hodges appears married to Mary, which might give a clue as to which John Chadwick that is, but no luck. Will keep trying, claytonbradley

Have you looked at some of the trees on a-----y? There are several for Chadwicks in the area, but I had a quick look and couldn't find anything new. I just had a look at John, son of Matthew, in Leeds with a draper in 1851 and it looks as though he became a Methodist New Connexion minister, 1891 Chesterfield b Belper, 1881 Boston b Belper, 1871 London, Finsbury widower b Milford children Mary Hannah 14 Matthew 11 John 6 Chas Herbert 2, all born Ireland.
William and Hannah Ball were born in Youlgrave, Derbyshire, moved with their family to Belper where Hannah married John Chadwick and died in 1840, as you know. William, son of William, married a Mary Chadwick at Crich 13 sep 1835, probably, though I can't prove it, his first cousin Mary, daughter of Hannah. In 1841 William, Mary and children John and Jane were in Heaton Norris, Stockport. So was James Chadwick, shoemaker with some of his children. I assumed he died when I lost him on the censuses, but he emigrated to Queensland, which was very brave at his age. bye for now, claytonbradley

I have been following this thread with great interest, though I am afraid I cannot help to identify the correct John Chadwick. My interest lies in James Ball who m Thirza Birch and they have numerous associations with Chadwicks, but I cannot work out if these Chadwicks are related. There are earlier Chadwicks in the Duffield registers with strange names like Aquila.
Matthew Chadwick who m Mary Redfearn  I thought came from the family at Alstonfield in Staffs, Nathaniel and Elizabeth nee Redfern. John Chadwick m Hannah Ball says b Wetton, but is associated with James Chadwick, shoemaker, m Olive Bott,(both have a daughter Olive bap 1826) both Wesleyan Methodist, who I thought belonged to the Alstonfield family as he has a son Nathaniel. On the Heaton Norris census in 1861, James Chadwick says he was born in Alstonfield. I don't know if there is a relationship between Charles Bott and Olive Bott and I haven't looked into the Wetton family. Probably of no help, but there is also a John Chadwick b abt 1804 Milford, whose occupation seems to vary between censuses,(1861 mechanic) who moves to Manchester with a wife Elizabeth ?Birch. Best wishes, claytonbradley

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Peter Jolleys birth place ?

If you look at the census, it says Osltwistle, I think, not Ouktwistle and I think the census taker was trying to reproduce what he heard. I wrote an article some years ago in the Manchester and Lancs Fh magazine about proving Catherine Whitaker's parentage and have done more work since them, but still have not proved Peter Jolleys' parentage, although I think he is the illegitimate Peter Jolleys, son of Betty of Cockerham, b 1793. I also wrote an article in the Cheshire FH magazine more recently about this family, best wishes, clayton bradley
