Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / Albert Daykin's b.1868 Parents?
« on: Sunday 06 March 11 23:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
my g.grandad was Albert Daykin (b.1868 - Horncastle, Lincs) Who married Ann Eliza Surfleet.
I am having issues finding out Alberts parents.

First of all there seem to be different spellings dakin, daykins, dakins which seems to be making it a bit trickier, but the 1881 census (when he would be 13)  it says that George Daykins & Ann Daykins are his grandparents but the 1871 census (when he would be 3) says that George Dakins & Ann Dakins are his parents.

Another search I have done on another site brought up that Albert's mother was Charlotte Dakin

Who I found on the 1861 census living with her Dad George Dakin.

Is anyone able to shed any light on this as to what may be the most likley situation, because if his mother was Charlotte dakin, would this mean she maybe didn't marry because surely her sons Surname should be that of the fathers?

Any advise apprecaited.

Rach.

The Common Room / Is this the same Person? - GUNN/SHAW NOTTS
« on: Sunday 07 November 10 20:09 GMT (UK)  »
My 4x Great grandad Thomas Ladds (b.1801 Newark, Nottinghamshire) married Harvey Shaw (according to 1841,51,61,71 Census' born 1800/1801 & died 1971) in 1830

I am trying to search a little more on Harvey's side & I had a lot of difficulty finding about her parents or birth certificates. But this evening I stumbled upon what I think may have been her previous marraige to Thomas Shaw in 1816. It falls under the 'Nottinghamshire, England, Extracted Parish Records'

Now if I follow this and Her maiden name is Gunn it looks like she was born in 1797. I also tried to have a bit of a look for Thomas Shaw to see if I can find out if he died or they divorced but I can't really come up with anything.

Anyone able to shed any light if they think this is the same person, or what happened to the marraige to Thomas?

Thanks

World War One / More info on Soldier?
« on: Saturday 07 August 10 12:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I have got the Marraige certificate of my great grandparents, and I know Little of my great grandad, but on it it says, they were married in  1919, he was 21, his residence was Swineshead & he was a soldier.
Now I know he was born in Suffolk and obviously moved for some reason up to Swineshead.

My question is, how do I find out more about what type of soldier he was, where he was signed up etc.

I am a member of ancestry.co.uk and have tried searching on the military section but the name charles frank potter isn't all that unusual and I am unsure if he would have signed up in suffolk or lincolnshire, or are the chances maybe neither of these depending on what type of soldier he wanted to be and where they were recuiting.

Any ideas how I can take this further? Until then I'll keep my peepers on ancestry.co.uk

Thanks for any tips.

World War One / Grandad's R.A WW1 Medals..
« on: Wednesday 03 February 10 00:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I've decided to attempt to track down my family tree this year and I was wondering if any of you kind people could give me any advice as to whether I can get any certificates, or information just by the information I have on my grandad (Just name and date of birth) and that I have 2 medals of his.

One of which is either a silver or bronze (Silver I think) medal (without ribbon) which has gone on one side a man on a horse, and on the other "GEORGIVS V BRITT. OMN. REX. ET. IND IMP"
It also has along the side of it '684 DVR. R.SENIOR R.A' (obviously my grandads rank and name)

I have tried searching for my grandad on ancestory.com but I can't seem to find anything.

Is there anyone, such as archives or something who would be more useful to me if I was to write to them or call them too see if they could give me more information on my grandads time in the war?

Much Appreciated for any help

Rachael
