Armed Forces / Waterloo
« on: Wednesday 20 June 07 19:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi Folks,

Is anyone able to do a look-up on the Waterloo Rolls (or even Trafalgar)?

Joseph BASTOW was a boot and shoemaker, born c. 1789 in Bingley, Yorkshire, d. 1850's in Meltham, Yks. and was a member of the Household Cavalry Life Guards.  Two of his 15 (!) children were named Horatio Nelson and Wellington, and on retiring from the army he opened a pub in Meltham called "The Life Guardsman".

Any info on him would be much appreciated.

Hi all you experts,

This is one of the best photos of moi (taken a few years ago, I must admit), but it is very spotty and a bit too red.  Can anyone fix it?

Thanks a lot,

Lancashire Lookup Requests / 4-year-old Boarder in Prescot - 1861
« on: Sunday 04 March 07 08:09 GMT (UK)  »
Could some kind person please look up Thomas H. Traverse (age 4) on the 1861 census for me?  I ran out of credits after printing the page that he was on, but some of the Birchall (I think) family he was boarding with were listed on the previous page, so I need that page, too.  The address was St. Helens Road, Prescot, Lancs.

(I thought it was interesting that all the families on that page were involved in watchmaking!)

Thanks for your help.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Can anyone date this photo, please?
« on: Tuesday 20 February 07 18:14 GMT (UK)  »
This is my first attempt at posting a picture, so I hope it works!

I received this photo recently and think it may be of my great-grandparents, both born in the early 1830's.  I think the baby may be their grandchild, but perhaps not.  (Someone told me that it must be a boy, as it's sitting on the man's knee - was that usually the case?)

I hope someone can date it for me.

Lancashire / EVANS in Liverpool - Please help!
« on: Tuesday 12 September 06 20:25 BST (UK)  »
I've been puzzling over this for some time and need a little advice/help.

My great-grandmother Sarah EVANS was born in 1840 in Liverpool.  I believe she was born out of wedlock to Elizabeth EVANS, but I don‘t think her birth was registered – can‘t find it on the indexes.  I found them both living on Drury Lane in 1841 (HO107/562/6) with Elizabeth‘s siblings.

Elizabeth (b. 1821) married a Josiah SWINDELL in 1850, and on her marriage cert her father is named Jones EVANS, Cheese Factor.  On the above census she lives next door to Evan JONES, Porter.  He is the right age (60) to be her father and they were all born out of county – Wales?

Sarah married James WHITTAKER in 1858 at St. Mary’s, Walton-on-the-Hill at age 17, and her marriage cert states her father to be John BENUSSI, Pawnbroker!

My questions are

1.  Could Jones EVANS and Evan JONES be one and the same person?  I’m thinking they might still have used Welsh patronymics. I have a 1847 death cert for Jones EVANS (71), who was then a Porter, the informant was Elizabeth Evans.

2.  Would John BENUSSI be allowed to “stand in” as Sarah’s father at her wedding (as a family friend) and even sign the register?  Or would he have had to be her real father?  In 1851 he was a boardinghouse keeper, also on Drury Lane, age 37, born in Austria, married with four children of his own (HO107/2130/250).  I can't find him in 1841, though - can you?

Thanks a lot,

Hi,

I would really appreciate a lookup for a Reuben (or Ruben) TRAVIS (aged about 60-ish) in Ashton-under-Lyne on the 1841 Census, and/or also his wife Mally, Molly or Matty!

Thanks very much.

Montgomeryshire Lookup Requests / 1841 Census - EVANS
« on: Saturday 18 February 06 20:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I would be really grateful if someone could look up my gg-grandfather, Samuel EVANS in 1841. His daughter Sarah (b. 1832) married John Pryce in Welshpool in 1857, and their marriage cert says Samuel, a Weaver, was deceased. I'm hoping he was still alive in 1841 and that Sarah was with him.

I did find a Samuel Evans, weaver, on Pool Road, Newtown, in 1851, and also a Sarah (age 19) working as a servant in Gro, but I need the 1841 record to see if they are "mine".

Sarah says she was born in Welshpool on later censuses.

Thanks very much.
