Occupation Interests / Hunstmen
« on: Friday 25 September 09 06:23 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

An ancestor of mine was a "Huntsman" in Liverpool (!) in the mid-1700's and I was wondering what exactly he would have done.  Would he have been an employee on an estate or working on his own?  Did he "ride to hounds" or hunt vermin on farms?  Can't find the occupation listed on any websites.  Does anybody know?

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Almondbury Baptisms & Marriages - RILEY
« on: Wednesday 09 September 09 06:57 BST (UK)  »
My gg-grandmother Mary Riley's 1843 marriage cert shows that her father THOMAS RILEY was a tailor in Almondbury.  (I think he may have died before that, though, because he doesn't appear on the 1841 census.)

I am trying to find Thomas's baptism - I believe he was born in the 1770's.   As he and several of his sons were tailors, perhaps his father was, too.

The IGI shows the marriage of a Thomas Riley to a Mary Brook in Huddersfield on 7 Oct 1799.  It also shows the baptism of 8 children of Thomas and Mary at High St Chapel Methodist New Connexion, Huddersfield, but they say they were born in Almondbury or Crosland Moor on the censuses.  They were: Sarah (1803), Thomas (1805), Richard (1807), Rowland (1808), Samuel B (1810), Matilda (1813), MARY (1814) and Hannah (1817).  However, the oldest child, Elizabeth, was baptised in 1800 "near Lockwood".

If anyone can find out anything about my Rileys I would be extremely grateful!

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Lancs OPC Suspended???
« on: Thursday 06 August 09 18:48 BST (UK)  »
This morning I tried to access the Lancashire Online Parish Clerks and got the following message:

"THIS ACCOUNT HAS BEEN SUSPENDED
Please contact the support department as soon as possible, and please have your site name ready."

Does anyone know anything about this?  Is it a temporary thing?  Hope so!

It's a wonderful site and has been so useful in tracing my pre-1837 Lancashire ancestors.

Census and Resource Discussion / 1911 - Neighbours
« on: Saturday 24 January 09 05:59 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you, Arranroots, for your helpful instructions on the 1911 census.

I am having a bit of trouble with finding neighbours, though.  I put in the whole ref number, and added one higher number after the SN, but nothing happened.  Am I missing something?

I've just received this photo of my great-uncle, which needs some serious TLC.  His head is fading away - can anything be done to bring it back?  I think he has a moustache, although it's hard to tell.

Thanks a lot!

Lancashire / Radcliffe Wild - Vanished!!
« on: Friday 09 May 08 06:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,

I've been trying to find RADCLIFFE WILD, who obviously doesn't want to be found!  He was born in 1865 in Bardsley, Lancashire (near Ashton-under-Lyne) to George and Hannah Wild.  He appears on the 1871 and 81 census - in 1881 he was a colliery weighman - but then he just disappears without a trace.  I've checked deaths, marriages, passenger lists and even Google, with no luck at all.

Can you help locate him, please?

Census and Resource Discussion / What does this mean on Census?
« on: Monday 31 March 08 07:23 BST (UK)  »
I just downloaded the 1891 census image for a man aged 39 with a family - his wife is employed.  Under his Occupation is only the letter "Z".  In the previous census he was a book seller.  Does anyone know what this letter might mean?

Thanks,

Lancashire / Cotton Mills in Wigan
« on: Sunday 18 November 07 18:45 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out the names of the cotton mills in Wigan in the 1950's.  My grandfather was a secretary in one of them for many years and retired from the position in 1958.

Would they be listed together in a directory of that period?  Can anyone please do a lookup for me?

Thanks very much.

World War One / Need help deciphering WWI Medal Card
« on: Thursday 01 November 07 17:58 GMT (UK)  »
I have just downloaded my great uncle's WWI Medal Card from the NA and don't understand some of it.

Top line, above name:  S 1C334, then it looks like BW & V ???, 25/11/27

Name:  Travis, Walter

Corps:  Northants Reg't.   Rank:  Comm'y

Corps:  K.O.Y.L.I.   Rank:  Lieut.  (before that on same line is "M.C.")

Medal:  Victory    Roll:  K.O.Y.L.I.  OFF/114  Page:  206D
             British                   "               "                     "

Remarks:  i.v.B/3921 d/28-11-27
                 NW/8/28763

No theatre of war or date of entry.

I have been told he was awarded the Military Cross for service in Egypt.  (I know KOYLI stands for King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.)

Can anyone enlighten me about the other numbers and letters, please?  And does it tell where he might have fought?

Thanks for your help.
