The Common Room / Legality of second marriage
« on: Monday 31 May 10 00:45 BST (UK)  »
Just wondering...

In the early 1900's, if a couple separated and the wife emigrated to another country, would the husband, not knowing whether she was alive or dead, be legally entitled to remarry after a certain period of time?  Or would it still be considered bigamous unless he had proof of her death?

Hi David,

Don't completely discount the father's name on a marriage certificate!

My illegitimate ancestor was married using her mother's maiden name, but she also named her father on the cert.  On researching this man, I found out that he was living right next door at the time of her birth.  He was an immigrant with an unusual name, and the child was given a similar middle name (Bennis, instead of Benussi).  Her mother probably said his name as she heard it through an accent, but the daughter put his correct name, address and occupation in full - and broke down my brick wall!

I believe illegitimate children were quite often given the father's surname as their middle name.

Hi Andy and Ruskie,

Of course!!  Don't know why I didn't think of that.

Thanks a lot.

Does anyone know where I can find out which towns are covered by Liverpool North, Liverpool South and West Derby on the Civil Registration Indexes?  For an ancestor who lived in Bootle, Aintree or Crosby, for instance, I'm not sure if I should be looking for the exact town or if they're all lumped together in one large district.  They seem to change depending on the year in which you're searching!

Thanks,
Arkay

Thanks for the suggestion, Jacquie.  We should make enquiries there.

I have located Fred's grave, which is on a database, but not William or Annie's yet (they're not in the same cemetery).  Luckily, we live in the area where they died, so we'll just need to do some legwork to find them!

Thanks for your interest, and have a Merry Christmas!

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for the extra info.  I guess a lot of folks in White Horse took the train to the "big city" of Skagway, probably to get supplies, as I don't think there was much available up there in those days.  Annie had a little millinary business, so she had to get the fabric somewhere.  Her husband, who travelled all the way from Ontario for the gold rush, and was known as "Hobo Bill", drove a stagecoach and worked for the WP & Y Ry.

As soon as we can find their graves we may solve the other puzzle.  Personally, I think it was a mis-transcription, as they got the age at death of their son Fred wrong (he was 58, not 0).

To me, it's a fascinating family history!

Thanks very much for that, Lisa.  Doesn't give a lot of personal info, though, does it?  Oh well.

Her son crossed the border from BC to Washington in 1947 for 3 days, and the border manifest card gave all kinds of detail, even down to the colour of his eyes!

Yes, we did find her death, but that's another puzzle.  According to the archives, she and her husband both died on the same day - in different towns!!

This game is full of surprises.

Cheers,
Arkay

I'm helping a friend with her tree, and have found a Mrs Wm Donnenworth, who would be her grandmother, listed as an "Alaskan Alien Arrival".  Could someone please do a lookup for us?
