Thank you all so much - they have completely taken my breath away. I feel very emotional looking at them - it seems to bring the people so much closer. Thank you.

And to Jim - that is so helpful. And I too am relieved that the big hairdo was not destined to last! I'd wondered about Charles's sideways pocket so that is interesting too.

Many thanks to everyone for their contributions.

William Charles Green was the son of William Green and his wife Mary Maria Price, of Tewkesbury. He was a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery, unit B anti-aircraft battalion, service number 158423. He died on 21st March 1918, aged 21. He is buried at the Anzac Cemetery, Sailly-Sur-La-Lys. His name is also on the Tewkesbury War Memorial, and on the memorial in Tewkesbury Abbey.

He was engaged to be married when he was killed.

Thanks for your reply Millipede - he does look lovely doesn't he? Auntie Bess had annotated the back of some of the photos, and had written on this one how handsome her Dad looked.

hello
I have these three photos of my great-grandparents, Charles and Edith, taken in Birmingham between about 1907 - 1914. I have a few questions related to them.
1) Great-granny Edith is dressed similarly in all three - blouse and skirt- I thought dresses were still popular then. They were not well off, so might this reflect lack of money, or personal preference, or was it the fashion?
2)The first photo - can't make out a ring on Edith's finger. Was it socially acceptable to have photos taken with male friends? Or might it be an engagement picture?
3) 2nd photo - might this be  a wedding photo? She seems to have a ring on. Also, the hair do....I have several pictures of Edith around this time and later, and this is the only one with  the hair so 'big'. Could this be fashion again or a special 'do' for a wedding? Also Charles has a pale coloured suit. They got married in 1909.
4) 3rd photo - the one with the little girl, my auntie Bess, who was born in Feb 1910. just wondered if there might be any significance to the buttonhole that Charles is wearing - not a normal flower - looks like a thistle? Charles and Edith lost a child around this time, so I wondered if it could be connected.

Interesting! I don't know if things were the same back in 1881, but by 1910 it seems you were given the job if you were unfit for other work....my g grandad had been injured at work. Wonder if your was something similar?

Warwickshire / 1918 not absent voters?
« on: Friday 21 December 12 20:02 GMT (UK)  »
H, I wanted to check my g-grandad's address in 1918. He was unable to fight due to ill health, so is not on the list of absent voters. I'm assuming there must be a list of the not absent voters somewhere, but I haven't come across  such a thing. Does anyone know of one? He was living in Birmingham, probably at 87 Devon Street.

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Birmingham records Harborne Marriage lookup
« on: Monday 01 October 12 20:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi - now Brummygirl has confused me with her kind lookup, I need to dig back further. I believe the Harborne records are at Birmingham - I would love to know details of a marriage between Joseph Deeley and Ann Walker, 6th July 1845. Many thanks to anyone who can help as I'm really puzzled!
