Thanks very much for the info. I have the names of his parents, do you have access to marriages? This may help to decide whether karlskrona is the correct spelling of the place where he was born. His parents are recorded as Peter Petterson (and all the various spellings), and mary Ingleson & Ingles. This made me smile as I recalled Mary Ingles in Little House on the Prairie.

On the various records I have, (and this would be due to the local Regristrar) the surname has been spelt Peterssen / Pettersen / Petterson, etc. He spelt his own name as Petterson. His given names have been recorded as Oliver, Olover, August, Augustus and Gustav.

Can anyone help with a place in Sweden?
The groom was born  around 1840 in Karls Krole, Sweden. It may no longer exist or the place may have been renamed or the spelling may be incorrect. It could be that the Minister who was English / Australian phonetically spelt what he thought he heard. The groom was a firm confidant writer, when he signed the certificate.

Looking again at the certificate, under microscope, and comparing the hand writing with the two other certificates on the A3 page, the second name is Krole, not Knole. They married in an Anglican Church, he was a Labourer, his father is also recorded as a Labourer. The girl he married was Irish, and although she signed her name, her handwriting is quite poor, his on the other hand is firm and confidant. Thank you all for your suggestions, I'll keep you informed.

The  groom signed the certificate, and gave his age and parents names, no joy with this so far. I haven't tried Natutalisation, and will try, thanks for the help.  The marriage was 1867. I'm unaware of the RC chat decipher, thanks for that avenue. I will try the europe board, and will also give the Embassy a go. Thanks to all for your suggestions.

The marriage took place in Victoria, Australia. The groom starts he was born Carls Knole, Sweden. It's the place in Sweden I'm after. I've done a bit of a search, can't find the place as it is recorded, so feel that this may be phonetic.

I've just received a marriage certificate, where the groom states he was born in Carls Knole, about 1840. Can anyone help me with the name of this place?
