Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Re: Warwickshire: Romeo OLIVER
« on: Wednesday 25 June 14 17:00 BST (UK)  »
What Christian names the Oliver family chose for their sons!  Miles Oliver, b 1883 Whitkirk near Leeds, bapt Hook nr Goole, Yorkshire.  Living in Gosford St Coventry close to Cleaver family  1851. Witness to sister Emma's marriage at St. Martin,Bull Ring, Birmingham 1856. (Emma = Charles Cleaver)
See 1851 Coventry Census.
1871 Census 51 Latimer St South Birmingham visitor to John Greasley, Boot & Shoe maker.  Another visitor Emile Paphenus (?) Foundry Moulder born Paris.  Miles' son CROMWELL Oliver born in Birmingham.  The Oliver family seemed to gravitate from Yorkshire down to Brinklow nr Coventry and then were found in Birmingham.  It would be interesting to know if this is the same family.
Miles died 1 Mar 1900 Birmingham.

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Re: Coventry Apprentice Lookup

Hmmmm, possibly not my Charles then as he was born in 1776. This would make him 9 when he started work. (Unless that was normal in the late 1700's)

Thanks for looking,

Rob

I hold the Coventry Apprentices and their Masters Reg, published by the Dugdale Society which gives a date for Charles Fisher as 9th February 1785.

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Assault in Cheltenham in 1938
« on: Sunday 08 June 14 19:31 BST (UK)  »
Researching the history of my gt. uncle Arthur Edwin Kendall who is thought to have left Coventry in 1938 to live and work in Cheltenham.  I found a newspaper report in the Gloucestershire Echo dated June 8th 1939 of a claim for wages, lost over nine weeks, as the result of an Assault which took place on Wed. 10th August 1938, presumably in Cheltenham.  At the time he lived in Roman Road almost certainly in lodgings. He suffered multiple injuries and was admitted to Cheltenham Hospital and then for two weeks in Bristol Royal Infirmary.   He was working at the time as an aircraft inspector at Aircraft Components Ltd, Cheltenham.  I believe this was the precursor to Dowty.   Though searching the Gloucestershire Echo for 1938 around the given date in August I have found no mention at all of an assault there.   This leads me to believe it may have taken place in the workplace and was kept out of the newspapers.  I would be most grateful to anyone who could help me solve the mystery of this attack on my relative.  He left Cheltenham to work at Filton Aircraft Works and found lodgings in Bristol where he died aged 61 in 1944.

Sussex / Re: TRAGIC ACCIDENT IN Mid SUSSEX

Thank you Liz. however I e-mailed Burgess Hill library and had a most helpful response.  They have sent my query on to Worthing Library who have digitised  Coroner's reports in newspapers and will hopefully send me a copy.   They discovered the exact date of death for me which is of course needed to find the record.  Thank you for offering.   I hope to have the answer to my query soon.

Thank you  Rosie, yes that seems to be the date of death but I hope for more background detail of what happened.  Thanks for the others who have had a try.  Hope a newspaper article may turn up.
I looked on them in Find my Past but could not find any for Horsham area.  As his home was Lindfield perhaps there might be something there too.  Any further help appreciated. Thanks

Sussex / TRAGIC ACCIDENT IN Mid SUSSEX
« on: Sunday 11 May 14 16:37 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone throw light on the tragic death, reputedly in a farm accident of a 4 year old boy
SIDNEY JAMES BOX, only son of Henry Sidney and Beatrice Box of Lindfield.  He was born in 1934 and it is thought the accident was in 1938 -9.  Coroner's Records or a Newspaper Report seem the most obvious places to search but so far nothing found.  Please help if you can. Thank you.

Warwickshire / Re: Watchmakers of Coventry
« on: Tuesday 18 March 14 20:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I too am researching the Furneaux family originally from Clerkenwell London and who moved to Coventry.  My great grandmother was Emilie Isabel Furneaux - daughter of William Furneaux - his father Thomas Furneaux was the brother of Lewis Furneaux.  I am also intrigued as to why they left London and for more general information about the family particularly Samuel Furneaux born 1765 in London but for whom I have no further information.

Hello Debs
See my entry of 22 Mar 09 on this topic, My ancestors Atkins were in Clerkenwell but appear to have been a Coventry family.  This also intrigues me the connection in the trade between the two places that were watchmaking centres.

Gloucestershire Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Arnos Vale cemetery, Bristol
« on: Thursday 20 February 14 10:06 GMT (UK)  »
Don't know whether this may help at all? Hope it does.

Catholic Cemeteries:

Holy Souls: adjacent to Arnos Vale Cemetery was established in the 1860's when it was acquired by the Catholic church due to generosity of a Liverpudlian businessman.  Within the last few years, a decision was made to limit burials at the cemetery to existing graves only.  The first burial was in 1867 and the first register covers the period 1867 to June 1886.  The entries in theis register are in Latin.  There are six further registers, in English, covering the period 27th June 1886 to the presesent day.  Unfortunately, the second register, covering the period January 1904 to February 1922 is missing.  The original old registers are held in the Diocesan archives in Alexandra House, Pennywell Road, Bristol.
