Hi David

Sorry for that, there has been a lot of information, I am getting confused. ;)
A DNA test would be a good idea.

William wasn`t a cordwainer, I would have thought Agricultural Laborer, even thought he says farmer in the 1841 census.
Would it be 18 or 21 to be regarded as full age? As in 1801 he should have been 18 if I have it correct that William was born in 1783.
I don`t get this I have just had a look on Ancestry and there is an entry for the baptism of a Richard Smith in Woodchurch Cheeshire 1814 to a William & Elizabeth Smith. That would fit more with the 1851 Census which says he was born in Barnston
Woodchurch would be the right area, but then I can`t explain the Richard Smith baptised at Thingwall to a William & Elizabeth Smith, yet his sister Hannah is baptised at Thingwall and that is put in the 1851 census.

Thanks Alan, for that it really helps.

DCB The first two children are baptised in Moreton, John 19th June 1803, Mary 4th November 1804

Then the ones in Thingwall are William 11th March 1810, Hannah 7th June 1812 then Richard 26th June 1814

Perhaps there are two different sets of William & Elizabeth Smiths having children around the same time one set in Thingwall and one set in Moreton?

However a Richard Smith born/baptised around 1814 is the son of a William Smith, the timing fits and a Richard Smith is the father of my gg grandfather Johnathan Smith.
He also has a daughter Hannah is about 36 in the 1851 Census which would make her birth date around 1815 according to the Cheshire Parish Register Database she is baptise 7th of June in 1812 in Thingwall.
On the 1851 Census it says Hannah was born in Thingwall

As none of the children are annotated as Iigitamate and that I think the ones born in Moreton would definately be my ancestors, I would have thought that would have to have married at least in 1803 or 9months before the birth of the first one that I have records of in Moreton ie John baptised 19th of June 1803
I know of no other sources to verify this information other than the Cheshire Parish Register Database, Free Reg and any parish records either Ancestry or Find my Past may have.

Yes quite right dohh.
By the way do you know which parishes   THIN & APPL stand for on the Cheshire Parish Register Database?
I have looked on the database, as I am sure there is a list of parish abbreviations, but I have been unable to find it.

Hi Al

Thanks for that, I also came across a marriage for Elizabeth Flanagen & William Smith at Our Lady & St Nicholas Liverpool 9th of May 1803 which would be the year of the first child I have a record for.
This is also where his grandson Jonathan married Emma Roberts 15th June 1862. As you say a possible fit and this one is the same year as there first child who I have down as being John Smith but they are living at Moreton for the baptism which is on the 19th of June 1803.
This could be a family tradition as his grandson`s wife (Emma Roberts) gives birth very soon after their wedding.

Hi DCB

I wonder if on ancestry they have just copied off each other.
But my William Smith is registered as a farmer in 1841 and according to tithe maps he  rents quite a few properties in Barnston  for his four sons.
I know that Jonathan Smith (his grandson) was a carter at the time of his marriage, so he would have needed a bit of land and buildings for that I would imagine.
However on Cheshire Parish Register Database (CPRD) I can only attribute 2 children to William & Elizabeth, they are John Smith 1803 and Mary Smith 1804 being born in Bidston,
So I wonder where William was in between 1805 & 1814?
I have located on the CPRD 3 baptisms of children whos parents where William & Elizabeth Smith baptised I presume in Thelwall (in the CPRD the abbreviation is Thin, they were William Smith 1810, Hannah 1812 and Richard 1814.
I know that he had a daughter called Hannah & a son called Richard.

Hi jomcd967

Thanks for that, but I don`t think that he  is my William Smith as he was a farmer according to the 1841 census, and he lived on the Wirral or at least he was there for the 1841 Census in Barnston with Elizabeth his wife.
