Yes, it was. Unfortunately I'm in Devon so travelling to research isn't easy. I'm hoping somebody will give me the 'eureka moment'   ;).

 Thank you, so much.

Yes...all I have is 1941. Birth certificate as mother of Molly. 'When and where born' is 10 Warren Road, Guildford. Column 5 shows.... General domestic servant of 22 Ferndale Road, Woking (St. Margaret's Children's home).

Other information is from letters at that time.

Thank you

Veronica Jones

Any information or further research suggestions much appreciated on Veronica Jones. My base year is 1941. I don’t have birth date but probably early 1920s.

1941

In July of ’41 she gave her address as 22 Ferndale Road, Woking; that was then St. Margaret’s Childrens Home, occupation ‘General domestic servant’.

She gave her residence as ‘ 1 Bryn Llynfnwy Terrace, Nebo, Penygroes, North Wales’. I’ve looked at the 1939 register and I believe that it has been transcribed incorrectly but searching the village I found numbers 1,2, and 3 Brynllynwyy.  I’ve looked at possible connections with the Jones at no.2 without success, and because of the ‘closed’ records I’m at a loss!

On 28 August her address was 2 The Close, West Byfleet, Surrey.

In September she was staying with Mrs Triggs, 78 Cline Road, Guildford, close to her new job at Burns Laundry.

Durham / Re: gott in penshaw

Apologies but I've only now read your post. The William Gott that you're interested in is in my direct paternal line. I have lots of information following his marriage to Esther but he is something of an enigma!  I have nothing 'material' until his marriage to Esther. However we know her age, when and where they married, offspring, and his death shortly there after. I haven't been able to 'prove' his identity but there is, perhaps, a clue in his burial record. His occupation is 'Chaise driver'. There is a William Gott who married Dorothy Goldsborough in Darlington. His occupation is shown as 'Postillion'. She died 1774 so perhaps he moved to Durham and married Esther in 1778. I reckon that Dorothy was born 1736 so if he was around the same age he would have been 'a mature man' when he married Esther. As yet I can't find the 'Darlington William's' origin but I'll keep at it!

England / Re: Drummond/Gott/Genery/Gennery conundrum!
« on: Wednesday 16 December 15 14:08 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks Debra. It looks like Genery and Gennery were two distinct families, albeit in the same area, Deptford,Lewisham. On the actual Australian marriage registration Charles signs Charles Drummond Genery with a single 'n', as did his father, John, and siblings.

I'll follow up your info and suggestions.

Best wishes.

England / Drummond/Gott/Genery/Gennery conundrum!
« on: Friday 11 December 15 13:36 GMT (UK)  »
My direct paternal line gets back to William Gott and Esther Drummond, married 1778, Durham. They had two children, William and Elizabeth. I started looking at Elizabeth and the concensus is that she married John Genery, a market gardener 1802, St.Brides church, Fleet Street and lived in the Lewisham. A number researchers have recorded that their son, Charles, born c1819 was the  Charles (Gennery) who married Sarah Underwood Sturman, b1829, Kings Langley. A number of trees have relied on this union!

It is worth noting that because of the alleged importance of James the name Drummond was incorporated through many generations and was used for at least three of Charles' siblings.

Now the conundrum! Clear records have emerged from Victoria, Australia of a Charles Drummond Genery, born c1819, Lewisham, marrying 1855 in Williamstown. Bride was a Anne Roberts, widowed 1845 born c1818, Deptford (same area as Charles).

Charles, a bachelor, is a Miner, arrived 1852; parents are listed as William Genery,  nurseryman and Elizabeth, maiden name Gott

Anne's parents are Thomas Marshall, mariner, and Sarah, maiden name Roberts.

Charles died in Williamstown 29 March1878, aged 60.Record shows one child, Anne Drummond Genery, aged 22 years. Informant was Mary Anne Roberts, stepdaughter.

The obvious anomaly is the father John or William Genery but it is so much of a coincidence! Whilst this doesn't affect my tree I am intrigued. I've searched records but have been unable to find a resolution. Any ideas folks?

Hi Sue,

I'm happy to share whatever I come up with, though I'm afraid I'm no further forward with the military question. I've now got back into research and am concentrating on their parents, William Gott and Esther Drummond. Esther is well documented but William is something of an enigma. All I know for definite is that he was buried in Durham in 1781 and was a chaise driver.
I've gone round in circles for quite some time but now believe that Esther may have been his second wife and that he moved from Darlington to Durham following the death of his first wife. I have a lot of circumstantial material that I will investigate but still have nothing to demonstrate the link!
There are quite a few people with Gott/Genery trees so where is your link?
Cheers, Colin

Thanks for your advice,  I'll contact DRO and DLI museum. I'm quite sure that I have the first child so the six years from marriage to birth is strange now that it's pointed out! Particularly when he went on to have eleven children and two wives.

It's an odd period of my ancestry as his father, another William Gott married Esther Drummond, daughter of James Drummond, the alleged Earl of Perth. I can't identify him so no origin or age but Esther was around 22 when they married in 1778. He died in 1781 and recorded as a Chaise driver but no age given.

Oh; the peaks and troughs of research!  :)

I hope someone can put me in the right direction! I've been quite successful researching my Gott family but am now 'head scratching'. A direct ancestor, William Gott (born 1781 married Mary Bee in Penshaw, Co. Durham, 28 June 1803) recorded his occupation at marriage as 'soldier'. By the time his first child was born in 1809 he is a 'pitman' (as were his descendants for many generations thereafter).I'm intrigued with the soldier entry and would appreciate any help on the way forward. I live in Devon but will be spending a few days in Durham next month so could do some hands on research....if I know what to do! Many thanks
