Anglesey / Re: Elias and Mary (Nee unknown) Jones residents of Cerrigceinwen Anglesy ~1801
« on: Saturday 19 September 20 18:03 BST (UK)  »

Am I correct in thinking this " Coed howel" and "Nant" are simply local addresses? As opposed to be places further afield? I've been working on the assumption that they will be fairly localised.

I've no direct knowledge but I assume that's right.
I can find Coed Howel in the 1841 census (HO107, 1359, 5, 24, 8 ) and on the NLW Welsh Tithe Maps site. In both cases it is shown in Llangristiolus parish rather than Cerrigceinwen, but on the tithe map it is about a mile from Cerrigceinwen. The family there at this time has no obvious connection.
The name "Nant" also appears in Llangristiolus in the same two sources.

I did also see that there was a marriage between an Elias Jones and Mary in cerrigceinwen at Llangristiolus after the birth of Richard or Catherine.

Was this the marriage at Llangristiolus 19 Feb 1822 between Elias Jones and Mary Hughes?

Looking for the baptism of Elias Jones - father of Richard (1803) and Catherine (1801) - between 1755 and 1795 there is only one candidate at Cerrigceinwen.
Elias son of John William and Jonnet his wife - 8 Dec 1771, that is, his surname Jones is derived patronymically from his father's first name.
There was an earlier son named Elias - baptised 11 Mar 1768 - to John Williams of Coed Howel, labourer and Jonnet his wife, who was buried 12 Apr 1768.
Two siblings were baptized at Cerrigceinwen:
Owen 12 Mar 1769, son of John Williams of Coed Howel, labourer & Jonnet
Anne 12 Jun 1774, dau. of John William of Coedhowel, yeoman, & Jonet

The marriage took place at Cerrigceinwen on 7 Dec 1764 of John Williams of Nant and Jonnet Williams of Coed Howel.

There is a burial 21 Dec 1832 at Ceidio for Elias Jones, age 60. Not a perfect fit with the baptism in Dec 1771.

I've listed below all the Anglesey parish baptisms I can find (from FindmyPast) with father Elias Jones and mother Mary, between 1795 and 1815 - I expect you have already looked at them.

3 Feb 1798, Llanfechell - John son of Elias Jones, Cefngwyn & Mary his wife
28 Nov 1799, Llanfairynghornwy - William Elias son of Elias Jones of the parish of Llanfechell & Mary Roberts his wife
5 Jul 1801, Cerrigceinwen - Catherine dau. of Elias Jones of Ty Rhedyn by Mary his wife
13 Feb 1803, Cerrigceinwen - Richard son of Elias Jones of Ty Rhedyn by Mary his wife
3 Mar 1805, Cerrigceinwen - Ellin dau. of Elias Jones of Trehwfa by Mary his wife
23 Nov 1806, Cerrigceinwen - Jane dau. of Elias Jones of Trehwfa fawr by Mary his wife
6 May 1810, Cerrigceinwen - Thomas son of Elias Jones & Mary his wife

There are grounds for thinking this is a single family.
There is a younger son, Owen, who had a non-conformist baptism at Horeb C.M. Chapel, Llangristiolus on 21 Mar 1814. He was born in Cerrigceinwen parish and is described as the son of Elias Jones, farmer of Trehwfa (parish of birth - Cerrigceinwen) and Mary Roberts (parish of birth - Llanfechell).

Like you I can't find a marriage for Elias and Mary. Unfortunately Llanfechell marriages 1790-1800 do not appear on FindmyPast.

It is possible some of the children of Elias and Mary were known by patronymic names, so surname Elias rather than Jones, in later records.

That's better!

I was 54% Scotland and Ireland, 46% England, Wales and North-western Europe (I think).
I'm now 87% Wales, 7% Scotland, 6% Ireland, 0% England. This makes much more sense.

I'm finding matches with 0% Wales who, I hope, will help me identify the 7% Scotland, 6% Ireland

Hi,
There is no 'marriage certificate' for a marriage before 1837, the information comes from Bodedern parish records. The only additional information is that they were married in the presence of John Lloyd and W. Robinson.

Details for the marriage of William Edwards b.1831 are:
2 Nov 1863 at St. Cybi's, Holyhead between William Edwards, 31, labourer of Goferydd, son of Richard Edwards, labourer & Ann Prichard, 24, Foel, dau. of Richard Prichard, labourer. Witnesses: Edward Prichard & William Hughes.

But, checking the birth registrations of the children of this marriage gives Ann's maiden name as Rogers!

Anne 7 May, 1864 - dau. of William Edwards & Anne Rogers
Richard 29 Apr 1866 - son of William Edwards & Ann Rogers
Thomas 7 Apr 1869 - son of William Edwards & Ann Rogers
Margaret 8 Jun 1873 - dau. of William Edwards & Ann Rogers

and there is a birth registration for Anne Rogers b. 30 Sep 1841, Holyhead, mother Eleanor Rogers, father's name not recorded.
Do you have any ideas about this?

Could this be her death?
Anne Edwards, age 86, died 2 Jul 1927 at 16 Llaingoch, Holyhead, widow of gamekeeper William Edwards. Informant William Edwards, grandson, also 16 Llaingoch.

Where did you find the birth registrations of the children post 1840? What resource do you use to search?
.....Penrhoslligwy. Perhaps the children born prior to 1840 were born/baptised in that parish?
The informant "Edward Edwards" is a bit of a mystery...

The birth registrations are from a CD rom of Anglesey birth registrations. I can't find the birth regs. for the three youngest children.
All the children (except Jane) were baptised at Holyhead as the children of Richard Edward(s) & Ann(e), Jane was also baptised at Holyhead as the daughter of Richard Griffith & Anne - FindmyPast has the images.
It looks like the 'mystery' Edward Edwards was their first born child - baptised at Bodedern 13 May 1827, the son of Richard & Anne Edwards, Ty yn y graig, labourer (also FindMyPast).

Welcome to RootsChat.

The birth registration for their son Charles confirms Ann's maiden name was Thomas:
Charles son of Richard Edwards & Anne Thomas b. 17 May 1843, Holyhead
Also Margaret dau. of Richard Edward & Anne Thomas b.3 Jan 1840, Holyhead and
Mary dau. of Richard Edward & Anne Thomas b. 19 Nov 1841, Holyhead.

Do you have their marriage?
16 Feb 1827, Bodedern - marriage between Richard Edwards of Penrhoslligwy and Ann Thomas otp, both signed by mark.

Richard Edward, age 56, died 7 Feb 1858 at Goferydd, Holyhead. The informant was Edward Edwards, also of Goferydd.

If Richard is named patronymically there is a baptism at Llanbeulan which fits:
Richard son of Edward Griffith labourer & Jane his wife was baptized 23 Aug 1801.
Two siblings were also baptized at Llanbeulan:
William 16 Jun 1805 and Margaret 10 Sep 1809

Using Corwen as the reg district throws up 3 marriages 1900-1911 for a John L Jones depending on whether he was Lewis or Lloyd

www.freebmd.org.uk

FindmyPast has the marriage, on 21 Jan 1903 at Corwen Parish Church, between:

I can see a ANN Williams Bapt 10 Jan 1806, Llanbeblig, Caernarvonshire on Familysearch.Org.
But the image is on Findmypast which I dont have access too.

You may be better off posting a new query on the  Caernarvonshire  Board asking if anyone has access to it.

Trish :)

From Findmypast the entry reads - Ann Daughter of Griff: Williams yeoman by Margt. his wife
