Facts were fairly elusive when it came to officialdom if my family is anything to go by.

I have Ethel May as 1839-1949, she was the one before my grandmother 1896-1969 who preceded Eva Maud 1898-1970, there was ten of them. I know little of Oliver1891 and Ethel.

My grandmother was Minnie Ina Thiel

I see she was registered in her mother's maiden name. I'm tempted to waste a few quid on a certificate.

I think you are right. I can't find a marriage for Ethel. The tree your talking about shows Ethel having a grandchild who by coincidence is my strongest DNA match, that is confusing me.

Hi Heywood . I've just realised that you think I'm getting confused with Thiel and Shiel. Alexander Thiel was a German emigre who married and had children all registered as Thiel. Before WW1 they all changed their name to Shiel. Yes it has caused a great deal of problems but not on this occasion

I think you're right Heywood. This started this morning while talking to a second cousin who mentioned a great aunt who couldn't hear or speak. While we talked I looked at my tree and the only possibility was Ethel May Thiel. I haven't really bothered with her. Searching on Ancestry I saw a tree by someone with a fairly strong DNA match to me showing she married and had a daughter (Eva May Shiel)  and a grand daughter (Cassandra Lynn Self) who is my strongest DNA match. I think I'll ignore this and start again having committed the cardinal sin of believing someone else's tree.

Slowly it comes. On the 9/4/1945 her Identity Card was changed in Lambeth because of "M" (marriage ?) from her married name to her maiden name. That is from Ethel Robbins to "Thiel".

Thanks Carole. I now know that the "IC" means Identity Card. Now all I have to find is why something changed on the 9/4/45 by ANA M.
