Devon / Re: AYRES of Devonport
« on: Monday 05 April 10 15:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi DOB7
Do you know I have got and looked at the 1891 Census several times and not noticed that Edith is surnamed Cocks. As GRO is going up I had better make the most of the low rate and see if I can glean some info from the birth certs of Edith and the other 2 Coomber's you found.
Thankyou for your help.

Devon / AYRES of Devonport

My grandmother Edith Coomber gave birth to my father in 1912 out of wedlock. My next finding is her registering her brother's James William Coomber, death in 1949 as Edith Ayres, but I cannot find a marriage. Someone called Damerel has an Ayres in Devonport I would really like to know if their is some connection. If you are on line please get in touch. I cannot send a PM because you do not have enough posts apparently.

The Common Room / Re: British subject born in Germany

Thanks Kit
I took your advice and sent for a birth cert. for Elizabeth. The only birth I could trace.
The marriages were my g/mother Minnie who was 4 on the 1901 census and 21 when she married in 1917 in Gateshead, but was 39 when she married again in 1943 (what price vanity). She seems to have been known as Minnie, Minnie Ena, and the burial ground deeds show her as Minemina. I also have her sailing to India in 1928 and 1934 as Minnie

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. If it helps he was called Alexander Shiel and was 45 at the 1901 census and living at 1Robert Place Gateshead with his wife Mary and 8 children. The only other ref. I have is he was shown as deceased in 1943 when his daughter married for the 2nd. time.

Help please. I have a great grandfather listed in a census as a seaman. Place of birth British subject born in Germany. I am not sure what this means and where to go from here.

Thank's again Slightlyfoxed. It is hard to come forward, especially as I have had no contact with any other than my mother and father and very little said about anyone else. I have Jethro's Naval Record and cannot find any record for his sons.

TallAl  I am grateful for the link to J.W.C. death and have ordered the cert. By the 1911 census Annie was married and living in Cornwall with 2 children. Jethro had retired to being a lodger in Sussex where he died in the Poor House. James and Edith were living with their grandmother and were single. Edith was certainly single in 1912 because she had my father out of wedlock (presumably why no spoke of family history).

Thanks Slightlyfoxed.
I've had a look at the sites you suggested and they are very interesting for general information, but for specific information on the family I can't get past the 1911 census. Jethro's children must have had children. Thank again
