Lanarkshire / Re: 1945 Divorce Record - is there any way to access?
« on: Wednesday 26 July 23 16:52 BST (UK)  »
I wouldn't have thought a labourer could have afforded a divorce at that time. In the main the common man just forgot about a previous marriage and got on with life.

The Common Room / Re: Ancestry Subscription Renewal, a warning.
« on: Thursday 13 July 23 18:51 BST (UK)  »
I cancelled my subscription about six weeks before its end. It ran until the renewal date. I did get a confirmation email though so I had some comeback if something went wrong.

The Common Room / Re: birth registration - parents pretending to be married
« on: Sunday 02 July 23 13:07 BST (UK)  »
I'm afraid that there are so many lies on certificates.  My father gave his uncle's name as his father. My maternal g/mother lied about her age at her marriage to her second husband and a g/uncle married the same woman twice using different surnames.

The Common Room / Re: Does anyone know of any current Ancestry special offers?

Thank you everyone. I renewed at half price today having had my subscription end yesterday. The last time I did this I had to remove all the Ancestry cookies, but not this time.

The Lighter Side / Re: Family History Surprises
« on: Thursday 27 April 23 06:12 BST (UK)  »
I had extraordinary difficulty finding anything about my maternal grandmother's family until I found they changed their name from "Thiel" to "Shiel" to disguise her father's German origins before WW1.
Equally difficult was finding my maternal grandfather's birth. The whole family were in Dundee in 1891 and 1901 but the census said he was born in the Transvaal. Presumably the whole family went out there, he was born before they scurried back during the Boer War. The only way of getting a precise birth date was from his army records.

Perthshire / Re: Finding this group a 'clan home'
« on: Wednesday 26 April 23 07:34 BST (UK)  »
Your request confuses me. What do you mean by a "Clan home"? Having a specific surname doesn't necessarily relate you to a local chieftain. Many people merely took the name of the local landowner when the need for a surname was needed just as others took on the name of their occupation.

Ross & Cromarty / Re: Researcher Recommendations / costs
« on: Sunday 16 April 23 14:58 BST (UK)  »
I'm not sure what a researcher could come up with that you haven't been able to. They will use the same databases that you have. Why not put your question on here and see what others can find at no cost.

It seems no one has a job anymore however lowly. Everyone seems to have a profession and career nowadays.

Technical Help / Re: Windows 11
« on: Wednesday 15 March 23 17:04 GMT (UK)  »
I haven't changed to Windows 11 yet but am constantly pressed to use Microsoft products rather than Google, which fits nicely with my Pixel phone and android tablet. Microsoft always seems slow and chunky to me
