Hello,
I do agree with "old rowleys" comments, as I am in the same situation, anything that's helps track down the more elusive members of anyones family has to be of great use.

thanks for that Manchester rambler, looks like I've been lead up the garden path by ancestry again, had something like this before, when it showed census details saying my family had come from germany, when in fact it was Guernsey, it's enough to drive you mad sometimes, still a big thank you for looking it up for me, did not have the extra details that you found, those will come in very handy.

Family History Beginners Board / which george hornsby is right?
« on: Monday 31 October 11 16:20 GMT (UK)  »
trying to track down my g-grandfather George Hornsby, but have come across a mystery, I have one that is born in 1869 in Shirley, and one born in stepney in 1869, both in the army at the same time, both have the same christian name of father, both living in the same area on the 1901 and 1911 census and both working on the railway in the docks, so which one is which?? the one from Shirley marries a Mary Jane Wilson in around 1890, (who is from stepney), but when I look for proof of birth for him I hit a brickwall, any help would be great, as this one is getting very frustrating

The Lighter Side / Re: Marriage Church/Register Office

It may be a possibility that they were married in the registry office and then had the marriage blessed in the church, I know that it is done these days and maybe it was then, hope this may be helpful

Occupation Interests / what would he be doing?

While digging through the Dorset opc pages looking for my Wilson connection I came upon this entry in the Abbotsbury Baptism page

20 June 1833, William, son of Job & Lucy Wilson from punchknowle fathers trade is listed as  "Preventive Man" and I wondered if this was an early form of customs officer as there is a listing for a Preventive office on another entry, would this be a correct assumption?
