Looking for a Jemima Romain born abt 1800 she married William Terry 19 February 1821 in Portsea, Hants.  I do not know where she was born, I am having trouble tracing the ROMAIN family.  If anyone has access to the 1841 census that may tell me if she was born in Hampshre.  She died in 1855 aged 55.

Many thanks

London and Middlesex / Re: Brindley family originally from Audley, Staffs.
« on: Thursday 05 May 05 09:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have been researching my family tree for a couple of years and have now just started researching my boyfriends.  He is a Brindley and from what I have gathered so far his GGGG Grandfather was Thomas Brindley born Lichfield Stafford abt 1829, his son was Ernest Robert Brindley born abt 1867 in Southampton, his son was Victor T Brindley born Canning Town Essex abt 1900, his son was Roy born 1928 in Southampton.

I have more info but I thought I would just send this to see if you think there is a link there somewhere.

Best wishes

Ireland / Lovett/Malaughney
« on: Monday 25 April 05 11:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am desperately seeking a marriage record for a James Lovett (born abt 1812 South Africa) to Ann Malaughney.  Their son James was born 1840 and baptised at St George Hanover Square.  As I believe James was their eldest son I was hoping to find their marriage on 1837 online but no trace.  If they were married in Ireland can anyone help with this.  On the census records Ann is known as Elizabeth but I am 99% sure they are the same person.  Her birthplace is stated as Kilkenny but I am not 100% sure on that one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.    ???

The Common Room / Census Records

Does anyone know if there is a genealogy lobby petitioning for the release of census records earlier than the stupid 100 year rule.

As I was trawling through the parish registers for marriage records in my local archives office yesterday I realised there is so much more personal information available than held in simple census records.  I can find someones marriage certificate, their childrens baptism records, deaths etc.

It seems very strange that we have to wait until 2011 to find out where our ancestors were in 1911 but we can see who they married and if they had children right up to the present date.

Did the recent Freedom of Information Act not include anything relating to census records??

Best wishes

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Richard LAWRENCE
« on: Sunday 10 April 05 09:36 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone please help, I am looking for the baptism record of my GGG Grandfather Richard Lawrence.  According to all census records and his date of death he was born abt 1819.  In some censuses his place of birth is Bishops Waltham, sometimes Upham and sometimes Owslebury !!!

After a visit to Winchester Records Office I checked the baptism registers for all these parishes and cannot find him.  I did find 4 other Lawrence's born abt 1820, 1822, 1825 and 1828 (William, George, John and Jane) with the father Richard and mother Ann.  My GGG Grandfather named 4 of his children with the same names so I am leaning towards Richard and Ann being his parents but I need to confirm this with his baptism record.

My GGG Grandfather married Mary Ann Allen in Owslebury in 1843.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best wishes

The Common Room / MURTAGH
« on: Tuesday 05 April 05 10:30 BST (UK)  »
I have previously posted re this surname and have almost sorted things but have hit another brick wall.

My GGG Aunt (nee Terry) married a MURTAGH.  On all the censuses she is the "wife of an Army Surgeon".  I was never able to find the husband but have just sent off for his daughter (Catherine's) marriage certificate and his name was Archibald Murtagh.

As suggested on this board his occupation may have been "hyped" up a bit and this has turned out to be true, his occupation was actually Master Mariner not Army Surgeon.  Now I have his first name I have searched for him everywhere and can't find him on any of the censuses.  His son Archibald appears (born abt 1882) but no sign of Archibald senior.  I presume if he was a Master Mariner he may have been at sea.  The only definite fact I know that he is listed as deceased on his daughters marriage certificate in 1900.

I have looked on 1837 online to try and find his son and daughters birth records so I could apply for their certificates for further info on him but I can't find these either!

(I have previously posted on the Hampshire Board in here which details the census records under the title "Help Please" !!)

Are there any census records for people at sea?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks
