Hampshire & Isle of Wight / HELP PLEASE !!!!
« on: Sunday 20 March 05 16:09 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone please help.  I am looking for either Catherine or Archibald Murtagh in the 1891 Census.  Catherine was born Southampton abt 1876 and Archibald born abt 1882.  Their mother was Sarah Jemima (sometimes known as Mina) born abt 1851.  I have Catherine and Mina in the 1881 Census and all of them  in the 1901 Census (Catherine has married a man surname Stubbington)

1881 Census

Catherine Shillington 24  Southampton, Hampshire, England Daughter  Portswood  Hampshire
Ernest Shillington 21  Southampton, Hampshire, England Brother-in-law  Portswood  Hampshire

(** Should say STUBBINGTON)

All I know about their father is that he was an Army Surgeon.  I do not know his first name as I cannot find the marriage.

They just seem to have disappeared in 1891.

I have also looked on 1837 online to try and find the birth records for Catherine and Archibald so I can send off for the birth certificates to establish the fathers name - but no sign of them!!

If anyone can help with any of the above I would be eternally grateful !!

Many thanks

Elaine

Yes that is true but you know what it's like, I just want to find that one small piece of evidence that place them together.

If he was in the army they may have married anywhere I suppose.

With help from Rootschat and the Royal College of Surgeons I have traced an ancestor who was an Army Surgeon.  Thomas Murtagh was born Dublin 15 May 1835 and died Hove, Brighton 29 March 1898.  I still cannot find his marriage with my ancestor Sarah Jemima Terry but all the information I have found seems to fit and lead to the conclusion that Thomas was her husband:-

1881 Census

Household:

Name  Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability

Mina MURTAGH   Head   M   Female   30   Southton, Hampshire, England   Wife Of Army Surgeon
Catherine MURTAGH   Daur      Female   4   Southton, Hampshire, England   Scholar
Benjamin TERRY   Brother   M   Male   33   Southton, Hampshire, England   Inspector Of Water Wks
Mary TERRY   Sister In Law   M   Female   30   Redbridge, Hampshire, England

1891 ??? - No trace !

1901 Census
Jemima (Widow)  age 50 living with son, daur, son-in-law and grandson - visitor Thomas Griffin age 52

Name Age in 1901 Birthplace Relationship Civil Parish County/Island .

Thomas Griffin 52  Southampton, Hampshire, England Visitor  Portswood  Hampshire
Archibald Murtagh 19  Southampton, Hampshire, England Son  Portswood  Hampshire

Ernest Shillington 21  Southampton, Hampshire, England Brother-in-law  Portswood  Hampshire

(** Should say STUBBINGTON)

I cannot find THOMAS MURTAGH in any of the censuses, presumably he was away working - I just need that final link to prove Jemima was married to Thomas.

As far as the Wellcome Medical History Library can ascertain there is only one Murtagh who was an Army Surgeon and that was Thomas.

How do I find him??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Kilkenny / ANN MALAUGHNEY
« on: Friday 04 March 05 12:19 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for help tracing a baptism record of Ann Malaughney.  According to census records she was born in Kilkenny about 1812.  She married James Lovett (date and place unknown).  In the census she is known as Elizabeth but I am 99.9% sure it is the same woman.  Any help would be great.

Many thanks

Thank you again for your invaluable assistance.  I think the first traveller description seems to fit better with the other information I have on him.

Many thanks

Thank you all for taking the time to help me.  I did not have the 1871 census entry and what you say seems very feasible.  I am going to Southampton Archive Office tonight so will research this avenue further.  Many thanks.
