With help from Rootschat and the Royal College of Surgeons I have traced an ancestor who was an Army Surgeon. Thomas Murtagh was born Dublin 15 May 1835 and died Hove, Brighton 29 March 1898. I still cannot find his marriage with my ancestor Sarah Jemima Terry but all the information I have found seems to fit and lead to the conclusion that Thomas was her husband:-
1881 Census
Household:
Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability
Mina MURTAGH Head M Female 30 Southton, Hampshire, England Wife Of Army Surgeon
Catherine MURTAGH Daur Female 4 Southton, Hampshire, England Scholar
Benjamin TERRY Brother M Male 33 Southton, Hampshire, England Inspector Of Water Wks
Mary TERRY Sister In Law M Female 30 Redbridge, Hampshire, England
1891
- No trace !
1901 Census
Jemima (Widow) age 50 living with son, daur, son-in-law and grandson - visitor Thomas Griffin age 52
Name Age in 1901 Birthplace Relationship Civil Parish County/Island .
Thomas Griffin 52 Southampton, Hampshire, England Visitor Portswood Hampshire
Archibald Murtagh 19 Southampton, Hampshire, England Son Portswood Hampshire
Mavner Murtagh 50 Southampton, Hampshire, England Head Portswood Hampshire
Archibald Shillington ** 5 months Southampton, Hampshire, England Grandson Portswood Hampshire
Catherine Shillington 24 Southampton, Hampshire, England Daughter Portswood Hampshire
Ernest Shillington 21 Southampton, Hampshire, England Brother-in-law Portswood Hampshire
(** Should say STUBBINGTON)
I cannot find THOMAS MURTAGH in any of the censuses, presumably he was away working - I just need that final link to prove Jemima was married to Thomas.
As far as the Wellcome Medical History Library can ascertain there is only one Murtagh who was an Army Surgeon and that was Thomas.
How do I find him??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Elaine
