According to my grandfathers birth certificate his father's occupation was a "Traveller" - what exactly would a traveller do?

The Common Room / Adoption Records
« on: Tuesday 01 March 05 15:58 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help - after a matter of deduction I have come to the conclusion that my great grandfather Frederick Taylor was adopted.  On his birth certificate (1877) the father is unknown, the mother is Eliza Taylor (a servant), the informant present at the birth is an Emily Harris.  In the 1881 census Frederick is living with Emily Harris and her father and mother.  Frederick is listed as a "Grandson" - there is no sign of Eliza Taylor.

If Eliza was a servant in the Harris Household in 1877 maybe she could not bring up the child and had him adopted to the family or maybe she died and they took him on.

It has been a nightmare trying to solve this.  Are there any adoption records for this time or has anyone else got any other ideas why Frederick suddendly became a "Grandson" ?

It may be that she had a relationship with a member of the household ... I just don't know.  Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Andrea, I did find some better sites through a Google Search and have e-mailed the archive library at the Royal College of Surgeons.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Can anyone help please.  One of my GG Grandfathers sisters Sarah Jemima Terry married a man with the surname MURTAGH.  I have no first name for him.  She is listed in the 1881 Census as the wife of an Army Surgeon, her husband is not listed.   I cannot find any record of their marriage so was hoping to trace him through his occupation.  Is there a list of Army Surgeons.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best wishes

St George Hanover Square

Can anyone please help.  I have traced the birth of my GG Grandfather James Coakley LOVETT  to the above District.  He was born March qtr 1840.  His father was James and his mother was Elizabeth.  Can anyone tell me if their is a baptism record for him and any other siblings (I do not know the area and am presuming St George is a church??).

I have not been able to trace his parents marriage as yet.  James Lovett (Snr) was born abt 1814 in South Africa and Elizabeth was born Kilkenny, Ireland abt 1812.  I know its a long shot but can anyone tell me if there is a marriage in this District for them.

Thank you  :)

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / 1841 Census
« on: Sunday 13 February 05 16:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, can anyone please help.
I am looking for information on the TERRY family from Portsea, Hampshire

My GGG Grandfather was William John TERRY born 31 July 1821 (Father William Terry, Mother Jemima Romain).  William John Terry married Henrietta Seaman on 6 August 1846. I have not been able to find any siblings of William John Terry. Has anyone access to the 1841 census which may list the family.

William Terry (born abt 1802) and Jemima Romain (born abt 1800)  were married 19 Feb 1821.  I have been unable to trace their baptism records and so any help with this would be great.

Best wishes

Thanks to rootschat I have located my GGG Grandfather James LOVETT.  According to the 1871/1891 Census he was born in Wyneburg, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa abt 1814.  He is listed as a British Subject and a cordwainer.  He married Elizabeth born Kilkenny Ireland abt 1813.  In the census he and Elizabeth live in Windsor.  How can I find out how and when he arrived on these shores?  Any help would be great.
