Could be ,but why barnside...was that a term use in the 1700's? Someone suggestd Hearthside but I am pretty sure its an ff not a th. I will download my pics to see if that helps.
Some of the other words I think are educated? guesses on the part of the original author or scribe.

my transcription reads: ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,all that new built brick messnage ( the word in the document looks more like mesonage - but I am guessing that messnage is what was intended]......of tenements (now divided into .......[indesciperable as is in a fold] )lately erected and built on a Toft (is this a village settlement?) or part or particle of ground whereon a tenement or cottage formerly stood together together with the yard garden orchard and barfside(?) thereunto belonging with their every of their appurtences containing altogether by estimation half an acre more or less situaute lying and being in the Parish of Halling........

I have had an interesting couple of days transcribing this long document. I have now photographed it in sections and if the above doesnt help I will work out how to attach the photo.

Many thanks for your interest.

I was asked to transcribe a lease document from 1743 and there are a few words causing difficulty. It is written in secretary script on calfskin.
The word I am stumped with is 'barfside'. I have an idea it might have something to do with mining. The area is Halling near Rochester.
Any suggestions?

Hello  Monica, No I don't subscribe to Ancestry. Is that Ancestry.com? I did have Granddad's date of birth but it is tremendous to now have the names of his siblings. I do have a photograph of a number of women all dressed up for the photograph. They may be his sisters.
Great grandad's drowning at sea explains why I could not trace him. With that info I may be able to find out more. I set all our Family History Society members a challenge for 2010 ~ To overcome some brickwall in their personal research. Mine was John Duncan Guthrie. Thanks to your help I am well on the way.
It must be an absolute pleasure researching with all the data at your disposal. I have spent the morning at the Pietermaritzburg archives trying to ascertain birth details, parents names of a lady in 1869. We have to troll the registers manually. No computer data base. Many , many thanks.

I am overwhelmed! All this info in a few hours ~ and we have been wondering for years. : Walter Peterson Gray married Wilhelmina (Ina) Henderson in Durban on 19 May 1903. Ina (my grandmother) remarried > John Alfred Guthrie in Durban on 16 March 1910 at St Andrews Church, Durban.
John Alfred Guthrie> son of John Duncan Guthrie (shipmaster) and Catherine Forbes m Aberdeen 21 Jul 1871 at St Nicholas. Havn't been able to find them in a census but maybe I have been looking in the wrong county.
Really! I cant thank you enough.

Hi Monica,
It was 1891 Scotland Census for the area(county) Midlothian.
Walter P Gray age 14. Born abt 1877.
I would need to subscribe to get more info. Having a bit of difficulty getting a debit card transaction accepted. I think UK banks are a bit wary of us 'poor' South Africans. And The Nigerian scamsters arnt helping matters.
I am Chairman of Natal inland Family history Society and would happily assist with any local research.

Thanks Bridgette,
Then Berwick or North Berwick is in the same area I think.
Would mid Lothian be the correct census area.
