Buckinghamshire / Rose GODFREY, born 20th April 1880 at Aylesbury.
« on: Saturday 30 November 19 12:07 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone come up with a bright idea on this one, please ?

Rose Godfrey was born in Aylesbury on 20th April 1880 at Aylesbury. She was the daughter of George Godfrey and Elizabeth Margaret Godfrey, née Simms. She was baptised at St Mary's on 8th February 1857. The Godfrey family were slow to baptise their offspring !

She appears at home in 1881 and 1901 and in 1891 she is in Luton with her mother visiting Mr and Mrs Pope at 18 Cardigan Street.

In the 1911 census she is no longer at home. She married in the fourth quarter of 1910 in the Aylesbury registration district.

On the same page there are only two other names. These are William Chapman and Annie E Eeles. Of course, I may well be wrong, but I think these two married each other and I can find them in the 1911 census.

So who did Rose marry and why cannot I find her in 1911 ?

Having married late in 1910 she and her husband would not have completed any full years of marriage so the entry in that column should be 'under one'.

As she is a fairly distant relative I do not wish to pay for a marriage certificate unless I absolutely have to.

Any ideas will be gratefully received. I have spent many hours searching to no avail. Those of you who have helped me in the past will now know how difficult some of my Simms ancestors and their descendants can be !

Bedfordshire / John and Amelia Simms 1911 census in Leighton Buzzard
« on: Sunday 17 November 19 20:14 GMT (UK)  »
John and Amelia Simms appear in the 1911 census, living at 26, George Street, Leighton Buzzard.

I have John in my family tree. He was born in Quainton, Buckinghamshire, in 1841/1842 and is the son of John Simms and Mary Anne Denchfield, both born in Buckinghamshire.

I cannot pin down John in between 1861, where he appears living in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire, and 1911, when he appears in Leighton Buzzard.

Can anyone put me out of my misery please ?

I have posted on the Bedfordshire forum as he ends up there. I believe that he died there in 1913 and Amelia died there in 1911.

Armed Forces / Military uniform , Simms or Cox, Buckinghamshire, UK ?
« on: Sunday 17 November 19 14:30 GMT (UK)  »
I thought I knew who this was until I started looking at military uniforms. Now I am totally unsure.

One option (which I was lead to believe) was that this was an English Sapper in WWI.

But am I wrong and is this the Boer War and did I have the wrong generation ?

Any help would be gratefully received.

We were told by Granny that this was Frank. We assumed it was her brother Frank Simms in WWI but it could be her brother-in-law Frank Cox but I cannot find a military record for him. Frank Simms was born in 1890 and Francis "Frank" Cox was born in 1886/7. So both would be of an age to fight in WWI but not the Boer War.

Beyond that I cannot find another Frank/Francis.

Annie Maria SIMMS (née DUDLEY) was born in Grandborough in 1860, registered 4th quarter.

Her daughter, Annie Elizabeth SIMMS was born in Marsh Gibbon in 1892, registered 3rd quarter.

On the 1911 census they are living in Castle Street, Marsh Gibbon, together with father/husband James, born Quainton in 1864, registered 2nd quarter with no forename.

I have found James' death in 1924, registered 2nd quarter in the Buckingham registration district, but I am totally stuck with what happened to his wife and daughter. I may have found Annie Elizabeth in 1939 in Aylesbury Mental Hospital but I cannot find anything relevant to place the death of either Annie.

Can anyone help, please ?

My cousins and I were routing through Granny's photographs and came across this one. The lady in the centre of the back row, whom we believe is the lady in the second attachment, appears in several photographs. We believe that she must be closely related in some way.

The family came from Quainton in Buckinghamshire and we wondered if anybody out there is a fashion expert who could help us limit our search to a decade or two? Any ideas will be very welcome.

Sadly very few of Granny's photos have any names or dates on them. Granny died in 1973, aged 91.

London and Middlesex / 1863 marriage licence for CANNON and SMALLBONE.
« on: Wednesday 30 October 19 18:31 GMT (UK)  »
I have found a marriage licence for one of my relatives dated 14th February 1863 at St Peter, Pimlico, Middlesex. Apart from asking myself if these two were incurable romantics, I wonder how long after the licence was issued was it normal to be married. Can anyone help me ? I cannot find a record of their marriage (apart from the GRO entry which just gives the quarter).

Since the relative is rather distant I am loath to pay for a copy of the certificate if I can avoid so doing.

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / Disappearance of Maud(e)
« on: Friday 18 October 19 09:20 BST (UK)  »
Maude Cross was born on 8th May 1875 in Marsh Gibbon, the daughter of William Cross and Jane Heritage.

In the fourth quarter of 1899 she married Robert Travell Simms, who was born in Quainton on 3rd August 1878. Their marriage took place in the Buckingham registration district.

Robert's death was registered in the fourth quarter of 1975 in the Aylesbury registration district, aged 97.

It seems highly unlikely that Maude would still be alive in 2007/2008 ! However I cannot find any registration of her death. She was alive for the 1939 census.

Can anyone help me ?

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Strangeways Prison inmate request
« on: Tuesday 08 October 19 19:42 BST (UK)  »
My father's cousin ended up in Strangeways Prison in approximately 1937. Does anyone know if I can access records to find his length of stay and the reason for his incarceration ?

His name was Norman Rupert Simms and his year of birth was 1910.

Hertfordshire / Birth of Miss SIMMS in Hertfordshire.
« on: Wednesday 18 September 19 21:46 BST (UK)  »
Hello Hertfordshire !

In 1931 (2nd quarter) Norman Rupert SIMMS married Ethel I CROFT in Luton registration district.

In 1932 (2nd quarter) the birth of their daughter was registered in Berkhampstead registration district, Hertfordshire. (I will post on the Bedfordshire forum as well.)

After that I totally lose sight of them. Has anyone any ideas ?

Thanks,

Heatha
