Buckinghamshire / Ellen Harvey (née Chapman)
« on: Wednesday 19 June 19 17:39 BST (UK)  »
Ellen Chapman married Ellis Harvey on 19th May 1894 at the Parish Church, High Wycombe. She was born in Wycombe about 1871.

In the 1901 census she is living with her husband at West Street, Great Marlow, together with their son, Ellis, aged 5. Son Ellis was born on 27th February 1896 (South Bucks Standard - Friday 6th March 1896) and baptised at All Saints on 5th April 1896.

In the 1911 census Both Ellises, father and son, are living at 403a High Road, Willesden. Ellis senior is a widower.

The number of children born during the marriage is 4, 3 of whom had died. According to the census Ellis and Ellen had been married for 9 completed years. So, according to this, her death would have occurred in about 1905. Thank goodness that he filled in these details erroneously.

I cannot find a death which matches her age, which would be roughly 34. Neither can I find the birth of the fourth child. I have Ellis baptised 19th May 1895 - buried 2nd August 1895, aged 5 months, and Maria, born 20th July 1897, baptised 5th September 1897 - buried 22nd September 1898, aged 14 months.

If anyone can help find Ellen's death or the fourth child I would be most grateful.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / NICHOLAS/NICHOLLS family 1871
« on: Saturday 18 May 19 10:41 BST (UK)  »
In my tree I have a Frederick James NICHOLAS/NICHOLLS/NICOLL who was born on 14th December 1862 at 19 Penny Street, Portsmouth, Hampshire. His mother was Henrietta COOK (born about 1840 in Portsmouth and who died in 1875 in the Portsea registration district of Hampshire). His father was Robert Henry NICHOLAS/NICHOLLS (born about 1825 in Truro, Cornwall and who died in 1906/1907 in the Brighton registration district of Sussex). They were married on 2nd June 1861 at St Thomas', Portsmouth, Hampshire.

I simply cannot find them in 1871. If anyone has any bright ideas then I would be very grateful. Robert was a tailor so I imagine that they would have been land based.

In the first quarter of 1892 Benjamin Harrison married Sarah Martha Dean in the Great Ouseburn registration district. Following this I cannot find anything related to them - no deaths, no census entries, nothing. Sarah Martha Dean was born in Leeds in 1866 and baptised at St Mary the Virgin, Hunslet in July of that year. I have no further information about Benjamin Harrison. Can anybody shed any light on this couple ?

George Richard Illing was born in Woodstock in 1854 and his birth was registered in the 4th quarter.

On 2nd August 1888 he married Beatrice Ellen Gough at Woodstock.

In the 4th quarter of 1889 their daughter, Gladys Beatrice Illing, was born in Woodstock.

On 31st May 1891  their daughter, Edith Mary Illing, was born in Walworth (baptised 9th October 1891 at Walworth St Peter and they were then living at 40 Fleming Road, Southwark).

In the 4th quarter of 1896 he died (aged 42) in the St. Olave registration district.

I cannot find Fleming Road in the 1891 census. Can anyone help me please.

P.S. I know they had left Woodstock by then.

Warwickshire / John Gough Paxton, born 1881
« on: Wednesday 19 September 18 20:45 BST (UK)  »
I have found the reports in the Warwick and Warwickshire Advertiser in 1921 and 1922 of the misdemeanours of John Gough Paxton. In 1922 he was sentenced to 9 months hard labour. Is there any way I can find out where the sentence would have been carried out and if he survived ? I cannot find any record of his death.

I can find Beatrice and Gladys in 1901 and 1911. However, try as I might, I cannot find them in 1891, or George, for that matter.

On 27th September 1897 Gladys was enrolled at Cator Street School, Peckham. On 10th July 1899 she was enrolled at Choumert Road School, Southwark.

Apart from that I have no clues.

Can anyone help with their whereabouts in 1891 please ?

Kent / Alfred Taylor born where in Kent ?
« on: Friday 13 July 18 08:53 BST (UK)  »
Alfred Thomas Taylor was born in Kent (East M???ing - doesn't look like Malling), according to the 1891 census. At this point his age was recorded as 25. He was lodging at Paddington Green Police Station (Civil Parish: Paddington; Sub registration district: St Mary Paddington; Piece: 4; Folio: 100; Page 32). I have found mis-transcribed as Allen Taylor. On 22nd August 1891 he married Ellen Brooker at St Mary's Church, Paddington Green. He gave his age as 26 and his father is John (deceased).

Can anyone help me with his place of birth ?
