Thank you Raphael, that`s such a great post!
And what a good point you make about inaccurate information being passed on and the need for meticulous research methods.
To feel protective towards ones family members, whether alive or otherwise, is natural and respectful, and to preserve their memory and honour their existence appropriately is right, and, I think, very connected to thoughts of our own (im)mortality. I would hate to think that in two hundred years time I was just one of a huge collection of names and married off to the wrong chap with a set of entirely unrelated children!
Therefore I feel the need to keep my research "in the family" - not all of it maybe, but I like the idea of having that option.
I am also deeply suspicious of what commercial sites may one day wish to do with the information I list with them. I know most of what I find is in the public domain and, usually, freely available however
my research is
my investment and I choose to invest wisely. I feel I have a responsibility to generations past, present and future.
Hobbies are also supposed to be fun and so to find a user friendly option that I can share with other interested family members would be ideal.
Its always very helpful to hear the experiences of fellow Rootschatters. Maybe one day Rootschat will offer something similar to Tribal pages, MyFamily etc...
Happy New Year
