Technical Help / Ancestry DNA matches - problem scrolling
« on: Tuesday 05 January 21 22:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Chatters,
I had my DNA done through Ancestry and have been attempting to work on some matches they have given me.
Upon going to All Matches and then looking at a few with a common ancestor the screen freezes and I am unable to do anything else, no scrolling down and have to go back to the main page to start again.
Is it me, my computer or Ancestry?

The Common Room / Fam search information.
« on: Monday 04 January 21 19:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all you Rootschatters!

Happy New Year to you.

I have been at a bit of a standstill with my Anctry family, so had a look on Fam Search.
The tree which popped up had ancestors back to the 1500's which astounded me.
I could not find an owner of said tree and wondered if it is a Fam Search tree  which has no owner to follow up?
My tree on Anctry is Williams Family Tree and I am researching the Cave line of Gillingham, Dorset.
My direct line...
Charles Cave   b.1789 Pitney, d.1850 Adelaide South Australia.
John Cave...b.1753 Compton Dundon, Somerset, d.1817 Compton Dundon, Somerset.
William Cave...b.unknown died 1779 Compton Dundon, Somerset.

William married Mary Butt in Gillingham, Dorset 1735.

His father, also William, according to Fam Search, also came from Gillingham and took on an apprentice ( Poor Law Apprenticeship Records)
Now when I entered (on Anctry) father as being William. (From Fam Search)...12 records also popped up.
I can delete this person, but can I prove he is mine?
I am not used to this happening..

What do yo think?

Cheers,
Chris.

Technical Help / FTM and Ancestry!!!!!! GRRRR!!!!
« on: Friday 23 October 20 23:50 BST (UK)  »
Finally...... I have time to myself and get onto my big screen computer (versus my phone) and lo and behold when I use a FTM updater and An...try it, goes apeshit! Sorry for the French!!

The FTM, when I am trying to merge flashes up that I do not have membership to An...try....and I have World Membership!
It did work once and then spat the dummy again.
An...try search asks me to type in the country EVERY time I'm on my tree searching. It always reverts to All Collections, inevitably the Americas.
Do they not know the world does not revolve ALL around THEM?
GRRR!
Just a rant.

The Stay Safe Board / Staying safe ....my place
« on: Sunday 13 September 20 23:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,

Chris here from South Australia.

I feel sooooo lucky!

We have not had any cases in my area of Aussie, a small population and strict border controls between us and Victoria (who have a new surge and in lockdown). The border is close by.

Life for me is on a small farm, tending animals and garden which will be fairly self sufficient as the weather warms up.
I can have my family here and return their visits.
My thoughts are with you all, and hope things get much better for everyone.
🤞🥰
Cheers
Chris

Hello All,
I have been searching for where both my 4th GGrandparents originated from.

William Cave and Mary Butt.

They married 21 May 1735 at Gillingham, Dorset and had eight children I think, (7 I have traced, the last, Sarah may not be from that family)

My 3rd GGrandfather, John Cave, born the last son, moved to Compton Dundon, married Sarah Hill in Pitney by Langport on 22 October 1783. He died in Jan 1817 and is buried at St John the Baptist, Pitney, Somerset.

How do I find where William and Mary came from?      ???

Thankyou for any help you can provide :)
Chris

The Common Room / My Elusive Grandfather
« on: Friday 30 August 19 14:01 BST (UK)  »
My Grandfather was Carl Robert Berg, born Adelaide, South Australia.
I am not looking for info on him, rather sharing a bit on him.
He died just after my birth, and my father never spoke of him...a smallish, ghostly, quiet man who was a Carpenter.....Cousin's knowledge.
Well I have been tracking his life down, he was actually a successful carpenter/builder and owned several properties two of which were in Adelaide City with another builder.
He succumbed to alzheimers and passed in a "Mental Asylum"
So everyone has a pathway in life and is not just a shadow.
I am pleased to put flesh on his bones and feel I have completed his story now.
On to the next!
Neverending eh???

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Ancestry DNA testing
« on: Friday 23 August 19 01:22 BST (UK)  »
Hello all you fabulous, knowlegable chatters!
I have rejoined Ancestry recently and sent for 2 dna tests.
One for my son in law (a kiwi) who wants to find his origins and one for either my hubby or son. My thoughts were to trace where my father in law came from as he was adopted.
If hubby does one, would it give a better result to that end than my son?
Next, does the result then belong to them? Or can i manage their tests?
I am the family historan, so they don't have trees, I do.

The Common Room / My Heritage v's Ancestry
« on: Monday 22 July 19 13:54 BST (UK)  »
Hello rootschatters, I have been a member for a while now and tend to follow new subjects searching for my "names". That said, I have  ancestry trees which I have let lapse due to being retired and careful with my cash. I notice My Heritage has a special at the moment and wondered if they are similar? Any thoughts?

Australia / Cave Family of Stoke sub Hamden to oz
« on: Saturday 13 July 19 04:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi all rootschatters.
I have posted previously in other areas but am still plodding along trying to find my family's arrival in oz.
Charles Cave, his wife Susannah (Susan) nee Darby had 10 children, one of whom died in 1837..  The eldest son, John Darby Cave remained in Somerset when the family farm was sold (presumably to wind matters up) and followed out on 21/6/1849 on board The Appleton. This was in time to see his sister Mary marry David Thomas 24/9/1849. All writeups I have found mention the family arriving in  1848.    But HOW, what ship??? I have been told that all shipping documents did not survive, but why MY 11 people???
Can anyone assist?
Many thanks for reading my blurb!!!!
Chris
