Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / 1861 Census: Hardingstone: DICKiNS
« on: Saturday 08 August 09 20:16 BST (UK)  »
I would greatly appreciate a lookup in the 1861 Census for the family of William P. Dickins, most probably in Hardingstone, Northants. William was born about 1817 in Northants and should be living with his wife Elizabeth, born 1815 in Greens Norton, Northants. Among their children should be a daughter Mary Elizabeth, born 1858.

Thanks in advance,

rthom

I realize that winter is the wrong time of year to be bringing this up.  :)  But if anyone happens to be visiting the Billing Road Cemetery, I would greatly appreciate a lookup of Grave No. 2539.

As I understand it, this is a round, bricked memorial which is full with 4 burials.  Three of these burials are known to be Thomas Hemmings, bur. Mar 3, 1892; Sarah Hemmings, bur. Apr 21, 1904; and Eliza Ann Hemmings, bur. Mar 29, 1928.  The cemetery register indicates there was one other family burial in this grave but unfortunately the entry is unreadable.

I would be very interested to know the name of the fourth family member buried and any inscriptions that are on the monument.

Many thanks in advance, rthom :) :) :)

London and Middlesex / Looking for Family of Emily Kate Hemmings and Frank Wood
« on: Tuesday 28 October 08 20:32 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information on the descendants of Emily Kate Hemmings and Frank Wood. What I do know is that Emily was born Jun Qr 1867 in Chelsea, London, and she married Frank Wood in Sep Qr 1889 in St. Pancras, Middx.  Frank was born Dec Qr 1866, Congleton (Alsager).  Emily Kate and Frank Wood appear to have had at least three children, all born in Kentish Town:

   i   Dorothy Emily Wood, b. Sep Qr 1890, Pancras, 1b, 181.
ii   Gertrude Wood, b. Mar Qr 1892, Pancras, 1b, 164.
iii   Herbert Edward Wood, b. Mar Qr 1897, Pancras, 1b, 156.

The last sighting I have for this family is in the 1901 census when they were living at 47 Oak Village, Kentish Town, All Hallows Parish, London [RG13/0155/35/62].

If any of this rings a bell with you, I would love to hear from you. :)

Thanks in anticipation, rthom

I have just come across this wonderful old photo of my family taken in about 1910 in London, which appears to have been around the block a few times! I realize that the gentleman in the top left hand corner is probably beyond help (I have no idea who it is), but I am wondering if it might be possible to restore some freshness to the picture which is the only one I have of my father as a boy with his parents and sisters.

Thanks in anticipation, rthom  :)

I realize this is a tall order, but I would greatly appreciate help finding the baptism record for Charles Varney in abt 1828 in Oxford. We know that his father was John Varney who was given as a "College Servant" at the time of Charles' marriage to Sarah Ann James in 1850 in Oxford.

The only clues I have as to the parish of Charles' baptism is that he was married at St Mary Magdalen, Oxford in 1850 and his sister Mary Ann Varney (b. abt 1833) was married to Charles Beasley at St Ebbes, Oxford in 1857. John Varney, the father, was recorded as deceased at the time of Mary Ann's marriage in 1857.

This could be Charles and his sister Mary Ann in the 1841 census, with no sign of a father John:  Sarah Jacques, 85; John Penson, 8; Mary Penson, 40, Thomas Penson, 10; Charles Varney, 13; Eliza Varney, 25; John Varney, 6; Mary Varney, 10 [HO107/89/16].

Here is Charles in 1851: Charles Varney, 23, Head, Tailor, b. Oxford; Sarah A. Varney, 30, Wife, b. Gloucester, Gloucs; recorded 2 Albion Place, Oxford St Ebbe [HO107/1728/233/25].

I would greatly appreciate a lookup in the 1871 census for London, possibly in the Paddington, Islington, Finsbury areas, for Edward Alfred Collier (b. abt 1843, France, British Subject) and Marilina Collier his wife (b. 1834/7, Marylebone).

More often than not, Marilina's name is mistrancribed.

Thanks, rthom

I would greatly appreciate a lookup in the 1871 census for London, probably in the Marylebone area, for Hannah Acfield (b. abt 1816 Marylebone), likely with her two daughters Julia (b. 1851 Paddington) and Rosa (b. 1853 Paddington).

Thanks, rthom

Oxfordshire Completed Look Up Requests / 1871 Census: Oxon: Thomas BUSBY - COMPLETE
« on: Wednesday 25 June 08 21:00 BST (UK)  »
I would greatly appreciate a lookup in the 1871 census for Thomas BUSBY, b. abt 1837 in Merton, Oxon.

Thomas is probably in the Bicester District, possibly in  Woodeaton or Merton. Living with him should be his wife Elizabeth (b. abt 1838, Fencot), daughter Elizabeth, abt 9, and son John William, abt 3.

Many thanks, rthom

I recently came across the following entry in the 1901 census:

John Wiggins, 44, Baker & Corn Dealer-Employer, b. Fencot, Prisoner, Oxford St Thomas, West Ward [RG13/1386/24/37].

I am very interested to know what led to John Wiggins being incarcerated and would greatly appreciate any help or guidance in learning more.

In 1891, John Wiggins, 34, Baker & Corn Dealer, is living at 6 Market Street, Oxford, with his wife Emily, 30, and son Arthur Leonard, 3 [RG12/1168/7/8].

This is presumably the same John Wiggins who farmed Manor Farm in Headington, Oxford from 1893-1906:
