I am looking for birth details of Thomas Harley (also known as Thomas Paine Harley).   He was living in Lambeth, Surrey, at the time of his death in June 1848.   He was born about 1800.

Dear Dawn
This posting was a desperate attempt to try to find the origins of my husband's gr gr grandmother known to us as Valeria Vassall Samms.   I have been given the runaround by the Registrar-General's Department in Jamaica since May of this year.   I know that she was born in Jamaica, married (?) Thomas Harley and had a son (also Thomas) about 1830.   The family then moved to Jersey in the Channell Islands and then to the UK (London).   They first appear in the 1841 census - but not Valeria as she had been committed to an asylum.   A recent Genealogical Research Update I received from Jamaica (14/11/2008), a birth record of Valeria Samms is given with the mother's name being Mary Gayle and the father James Robertson (esquire).   I was assuming that if this family returned to the UK it would most likely have been to the London area.   From all this you'll realise that I'm making a stab in the dark.
With thanks for your response
Marian

Would anyone have any knowledge of James Robertson (esq) and his wife Mary Gayle known to be living at St Elizabeth in Jamaica in the early 1800s.  They had a daughter Valeria Samms born 17 June 1806.

I am seeking information re the above.   He was a Lieutenant of the Royal Artillery and married Elizabeth Amelia McGlashan in Jamaica in 1797.

Take a look at the 1851 England Census.   The address at that time was 7 Wollington Place, Lambeth.   Thomas Harley (the son) was head of the household at that time.   Thomas snr died in 1848.

I'd appreciate a copy of the 1841 Census.   Could you please send it online.

Further to my message posted earlier, I've now found in my 1861 UK Census record that Octavius Harley (brother-in-law) was living with the Russell family (Thomas Henry Russell and Valeria V S Russell) at that time and it does say that he was born in Lambeth which isn't correct.   The living children born in Jersey were Valeria, Constance, James, Howard and Octavius.

If that is so, it can't be the same HARLEY family that I'm researching.   In my case, the father of Octavius Harley is Thomas Paine Harley and his wife was Valeria Vassall Samms.

Dear Kooky

It's just amazing that I picked up your message as I've not called up RootsChat for ages.   I am very interested in sharing information about the Harleys.   On the Marriage Certificate of Thomas Henry Russell and Valeria Vassall Samms Harley, Valeria's father is listed as Thomas Paine Harley (Merchant).   However, I'm afraid the address is indecipherable.   Even with a magnifying glass I can't make it out.

Octavius Harley is a brother of Valeria - born in Jersey in the Channell Islands about 1840.    I'm trying to trace the Jamaican connection.   You probably know that Thomas Harley (Snr) married Valeria Vassall Samms in Jamaica where their first son (also Thomas Harley) was born about 1830.   The family then moved to the Channell Islands where five more children were born before moving to the UK.   I picked them up in the 1841 UK Census.

I'll look forward to hearing from you again.

Marian
