Tipperary / Henry Marvelle Read Roscrea Tipperary Ireland
« on: Friday 26 May 17 12:11 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know of this Read family?

I am researching the Watson family of Dublin [see Rootschat entry Watson City of Dublin Steam Packet Company posted Wednesday 14 September 16 12:25 BST (UK)]

Ina Emily Read was married to Dr.Edward John Macartney Watson of Dublin, who seems to be
the last male representative of this Watson family branch.

Ina's brother Henry (Harry) Marvelle Read proved the Will of Dr Edward John Macartney Watson

I would be most grateful for any help.

To expand on my Watson of Dublin search....
Having traced my Watson family to Bengeworth/Evesham Worcestershire c.1491, I was surprised
to see this Watson family in Dublin with a similar Coat of Arm as my family.

Ours in Bengeworth-  Azure a fesse ermine between three suns in splendour proper

Dublin-      Azure a chevron ermine between three suns in splendour proper

Not only were the Arms similar, but the family stated that they were from Bengeworth!
Francis Watson [a man] having moved to Dublin in the early 1700’s.
Francis became the Master of the guild of Saddle makers and d.1749. His son's were engaged in the Publishing/Printing and book-selling business in Capel Street

I suspect that the reason I could not fit Francis of Dublin into my pedigree was because he moved from London to Dublin- not directly from Worcestershire. Therefore I might have missed a generation, not knowing his father, who may in fact be on my pedigree [?]

Wow!  Thank you so much  myluck! & Dathai

How I wish I had posted my query sooner on this site! All of your links will keep
me busy for some time!

Can I 'chance my arm' one more time by asking?
I know Dr Edward John Macartney Watson b.22 Nov 1872 was one of this family. He worked at St Patrick Dun's hospital. I saw a photograph of him in a group as a young rugby player. Also in the photograph was Dr John Magee Finny of the hospital and Trintity College. Was Dr Finny's wife Anne also a member of this Watson family?

I noticed that a Watson family in Dublin 1749 onwards, are said to be descended from my Watson family in Bengeworth Worcestershire. Eventually my search led to four brothers-

Sir William Watson Chairman of the City of Dublin Steam Packet Company [CODSPC]
Edward Watson, who took over the CODSPC from his brother
Sir Charles Moore Watson Soldier, officer and friend of Gordon of Khartoum
Arthur John Watson Lt Col Suffolk Reg. d.1906 Boer War

Does anyone know of any descendants of this family? I believe girls from this family married into the Gascoyne-Cecil/Balders/ Monks families

Dear Jean, This is so kind of you to take this trouble! Thank you so much!

As I live in Yorkshire I have to make notes for future research visits to Herefordshire/Worcestershire, which now that I'm 71 are not so frequent
You are obviously knowledgeable about history. Your theories about the possible waywardness of William have occurred to me from time to time-although not with any pleasure  :-\
As to his son, my ancestor Thomas Coningesby Watson, I have also had little research luck in Herefordshire after his birth. He obviously received an education, for when I found him in Norfolk [working backwards in the traditional Family History way] he was the land steward to the Wodehouse family of Kimberley [same family as the later P.G. Wodehouse] I have found many documents in his beautiful hand.  He married at Wymondham in 1775 but lived at Crownthorpe on the edge of the Kimberley estate. He was the Church warden at Crownthorpe. Part of his work was to organise the Crownthorpe Enclosure Act. I have details of his travel expenses to London and his appearance in Parliament to give evidence. At some time while still employed by the Wodehouses,
Thomas started a brickmaking business for himself in Wymondham. I visited the archives there, where I found numerous documents about the business-plus a hand written part pedigree showing his origins in Herefordshire!
By the way, Thomas did not have the Coningesby middle name because of his mother's first husband Thomas Coningesby of Grendon. He had it because of his own great grandmother Cecily Coningesby, who was married to Rev William Watson of Sutton Coldfield. This Cecily was of the Hampton Wafer Coningesby branch-the senior branch but obviously not as famous, or rich, as the Hampton Court lot!

Thanks for this Jean/Eleanor I will check that out!

As to his status, I have seen him mentioned on various Watson Wills, but while his brother Thomas' children are mentioned by name-William's are only referred to as 'the children of'! No-one ever mentions where he lives!
His mother Chrysogon Watson [buried Pershore 1753] leaves William £500 in her Will. However she
actually leaves it to William's half brother Rev George Coningesby Vicar of Bodenham and rector of Pencombe [Chrysogon's son from her first marriage] to invest for him [?] She even left William's inmourning to be purchased by George [?]
When George dies, he mentions his mother's bequest to William Watson and passes on the management of the investment to his executors-one of whom was John Ingram Attorney of Bewdley.

Is this because there has been some sort of dispute between Chryogon and her Coningesby children
and William Watson ? The Watson family were from Bengeworth, Evesham for many years, but I have also search in Worcestershire without success!
