Yes thank you Gazania. My Palin notes have got in such a mess that I have started this family strand from scratch! I have been trying without success to access the info on Lincs past but although I have registered I just get a blank screen. I think it could be to do with the fact I'm using an iPad and it maybe doesn't have the right software.

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / John Palin
« on: Monday 06 March 17 10:57 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for the parents of John Palin b.1758 in Welbourn and christened at St. chad's church. I believe his father was Thomas but have various ideas for his mother including Ann and Mary. The spelling of Paling does vary and can be Paling or Pailing.
Thank you to anyone who can help me with this.

Perthshire / Re: Is William Brooks really William North?
« on: Sunday 29 January 17 08:24 GMT (UK)  »
That of course is extremely possible. Brooks doesn't feature anywhere in family names that I have found so far.

If any descendants of William see this post I do have some documents including his discharge papers that they are welcome to have. It is his sister that I am descended from.

Thank you mdb

Thank you Monica for the info.  I feel now that they are definitely 1 and the same person. The only question now that I want to find an answer to is where the name Brooks comes from.

Yes and yes. His parents are Charles and Mary Ann and the marriage I found was to Helen McManus although that goes against the family story of him taking on his wife's name.

Perthshire / Is William Brooks really William North?
« on: Saturday 28 January 17 15:52 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information on a William Brooks who was a sergeant instructor in the army in Perthshire having previously fought in India and in the Crimea. According to his discharge papers he was born in Nottingham in 1835 and joined up in 1853. A family story is that he was born William north and after a family quarrel took his wife's surname. There is no record of a William North after the 1851 census that I can find so the story could be true unless anyone knows different!

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: DNA percentages

Thank you for all the posts. I hadn't realised until I started reading the articles how complicated the whole issue is and I must admit I still don't fully understand it. However I think I've gleaned enough to give me an overview and also to make me think that continuing my line of research into a possible Jewish connection on my paternal grandmothers side is worthwhile.
