Occupation Interests / Re: What would a "blind makers firer" do?

Thanks Michael - you've given me a whole different take on the possibilites.  When (if?) I find out anything definite, I'll post it.
Happy hunting to all out there.

Occupation Interests / Re: Non Domestic Gardner??
« on: Monday 21 February 05 18:17 GMT (UK)  »
I have a Gardener, not domestic, in the 1901 census and the family knows that he worked for Cadburys so I have always thought that it meant a gardener employed by a business, rather than a private household.  With all the work being done by hand, there must have been huge numbers of gardeners employed by businesses to keep their premises looking tidy.
Always interesting to find out how our ancestors spent their days!

Hi Mike
The relation (actually of my brother-in-law) lived in Teddington, Middx in 1901.  All that is given in the 1901 census is "blind makers firer".
I've had a suggestion that the blind maker may be making the kind of external blinds that many shops used to have which were made from material fixed to folding metalwork.  I suppose the "firer" could be involved in making the metalwork?

Occupation Interests / What would a "blind makers firer" do?

I have found "blind makers firer" given as an occupation for an ancestor in the 1901 census.  What would a firer do, and why would a blind maker need one?

Suffolk / Re: Pallant family from Aldeburgh suffolk
« on: Thursday 17 February 05 22:43 GMT (UK)  »
I have a Charlotte Dalby (b. 1806 Yoxford) who married John Pallant (b. 1808 Aldeburgh) in 1829.  I have found three children: Elizabeth b. 1832, Mary Ann b. 1835, John William b. 1837.
I have been given more information from a contact on genesconnected and can pass that on if you think they're part of your family.
Cheers.
