Book keeper perhaps?

Another vote for Book keeper.

The Common Room / Re: father's occupation/deceased on marriage cert.

I've found a few examples of brides and grooms 'upgrading' their father's occupation on their marriage certificates.

I wonder if the Welsh marriages were connected to the huge numbers of sheep and their drovers that went from wales to London every year.

If you are one of a family of seven or eight there is nothing for you in wales, but the drovers return with tales of the streets of London paved with gold, so you travel with them to seek your fortune.

Some would be seasonal drovers; others would be dairymen.  The Welsh, particularly from Cardiganshire, had a large part of the milk production and delivery industry in London.

There's a FB page - Old Shrewsbury Pics - might be worth asking there.

The Lighter Side / Re: Working Out Family Relationships
« on: Friday 25 June 21 18:43 BST (UK)  »
OH's 3xgt grandfather married and had 5 children, first wife dies, he then marries the illegitimate daughter of his first wife and had a further 8 children  :o

I've got a similar one -
Smith senior married Wife 1 and had one child, Smith junior.
Wife 1 died while Smith junior was a teenager.
Smith senior married Wife 2 - a younger woman.
Wife 2 had a child.
Smith senior died.
Smith junior and Wife 2 married; his little half-brother was brought up as his son and the parents went on to have half a dozen more children!

The Lighter Side / Re: Buried then cremated?

I've got a photo of a family grave in Ireland with a cousin's name on it - lots of people have assumed that she was buried there but she was cremated in England and her ashes returned to Ireland.

Technical Help / Re: Help Organising Photos
« on: Friday 10 July 20 16:32 BST (UK)  »
Trouble is - I need to organise them first before I can date them.

I've got a few rough dates but I'm trying to get them in order by seeing the changes in children and the seasons by the clothes and vegetation in backgrounds.

I've tried by names but that collects all the photos of each person together.

I've had another suggestion which seems to be working - by putting the photos as icons into a folder, I can move them around.  When I get them right, I'll label them numerically and move them back into Photos in the right order.

Technical Help / Help Organising Photos
« on: Friday 10 July 20 15:35 BST (UK)  »
I've finally got around to scanning loads of family photos which is going fine.

What I want to do next is to sort them into into the right chrono order.  I'm using Photos on a Mac and I can't find any way of doing this.

Is there photo software that would let me move photos around until I have them in the right chronological order?

The Common Room / Re: Churching of women after childbirth

It tells you when on the link
"The practice was dropped by the RC Church after the second Vatican Council 1965/67."

I would guess the why was because it was so misunderstood. Common belief was that it was a cleansing ceremony, which it wasn't but the idea was so deep rooted it was probably easier to drop it completely.

Pre Vatican 11 it definitely was a cleansing rite.  A woman couldn't take part in Mass or receive communion until it was done.
