The Common Room / Re: Possible illegitimacy and how to record it
« on: Monday 06 November 23 04:16 GMT (UK)  »
In this or any type of situation, the only way to record it, is as it actually happened. You are recording  history, not changing it,0 so keep it as it unfolded.  We all have things that happened, even if we wish they hadn't.  All those type of incidents can make your completed story a pleasure to read, why?, Because the reader actually sees the story as he or she is reading it.
That is how I'm doing mine, and every now and then,  I have to put tĥe laptop away to get my thoughts into some form of order before I can start again.

Somerset / Locations
« on: Saturday 22 July 23 02:33 BST (UK)  »
When you do locate a record and it says an event like a birth took place in Pilton or anywhere else  in Somerset. That is where the registration took place not the actual birth.
Would anyone know of a website that shows all the villages & settlements around any town in Somerset.?  This would be such a big help to everyone I'd be very surprised if there is not something on the web that would show and name these places. If you know of any such website please post the URL for all to see.
Thanking you all.

The Common Room / Re: Alias Names
« on: Saturday 29 April 23 04:39 BST (UK)  »
I always go to the name given for Baptism, as that is the Registered Name.
In my FAMILY there was an Alias used, which was SHEPPARD, but it turns out to be a work related name from what I'm learning of the early days of my family around the early1500's.  Not all that long after that time this name doesn't seem to appear. I would guess it's because of the change in employment, the family moved into0 the dairy industry.

The Common Room / Re: ancestry half price offers
« on: Sunday 12 June 22 02:59 BST (UK)  »
Personally I think these offers are an insult.   If anyone should get a benefit  from Ancestry, it should be those that have done the right thing, by supporting this company and paying their way, by that, I mean the people that have paid out the top premiums for the use of the Ancestry Products.

How about it Ancestry ? Are you ready to give a benefit to those that have benefited you.?

The Common Room / Re: Is a DNA test really worthwhile ?
« on: Wednesday 13 April 22 02:19 BST (UK)  »

A DNA test found me my 2x Great Grandfather that was unknown to any one in our family, even his daughter, my Great Grandmother. She always told us her father had died when she was a baby and all she knew was that his name was Henry.  The only Henry that connects to the family was her uncle, her mother's brother but there was never any connection that he was the father in question.  My results showed that her father and my 2X grt grandfather was a chap that lived a few doors or streets away in Warbleton, Sussex.  For me, just that reason alone was all the proof I needed to justify buying a DNA Test kit. Perthshire / Re: George Moon, Riechappel, Blair Atholl
« on: Monday 12 April 21 09:13 BST (UK)  »
Throth,
I was just reading your post on George Moon and I remembered I had some notes on him so I went searching. All I've found so far is this snippet, but when I find the others I will send them on to you.

The record below in "The Church and Social History of Atholl by John Kerr". 1750 Inspection - George Moon, Dyker in Blairuachdar, estimated costs of building a dyke around it 5'3" high, supply stones and cover with feal would be £3 sterling. This quote is in regard to the manse being moved from St Brides.

George Moon and Margaret Stewart are living in Riechappel 1736 -1748, it is the birthplace of 5 of their seven (7) children.

Statistical account of Perthshire Vol XII, North West Perthshire The Highlands of Scotland 1750 (Andrew Lang intro) Living in Atholl 1685-1785 by Leneman Book of Perthshire memorabilia by R Fittis;
Blair Atholl 1791; population consisted of 3120 persons, 1480 males 1640 females 758 under 8 years of age, marriages average 26 yearly, baptisms 94, Duke of Atholl owns at least half the parish. There are 11 owners in all 240 tenants and horses range free in the hills, horse racing is held regularly and the language is gaelic.  Atholl means great pleasantness or pleasantness Oll,*  A great many druid sites in area.  with a Sacrificial cairn near Clunemore. The custom of adding stones to graves was to secure the graves from wolves. Tradesmen of the parish are  Smiths, 6,, Shoemakers 9,, Carpenters 27, Flax dressers 16,, Weavers 38 , Masons 3, Tailors 32, Bred midwives 2
The 4th Duke of Atholl cleared Glen Tilt in 1784 to turn it into a commercial deer farm.

* this should be Off, I think has been miss-transcribed.
With a population of around 3200, is it possible for 32 Tailors to make a living, sounds a bit odd to me.

Cheers
Geoff
