Aberdeenshire / Huntly Estate - Valentine Etches
« on: Monday 14 October 13 18:17 BST (UK)  »
An ancestor of mine, Valentine Etches, was employed as a gamekeeper on the Huntly Estate around 1820 -1825. I'm trying to find any record of his employment there or any information about him during this time. Could anyone help me please ?

Cumberland / The Packhorse Inn and Newton Place, Crosthwaite
« on: Sunday 22 September 13 17:19 BST (UK)  »
Hello, some ancestors of mine,Hugh and Mary Edmondson were licensed victuallers and seem to have ran a number of pubs/inns in Crosthwaite and Martindale between 1841 to 1861. As both places appear to be remote even by today's standards I'm at a loss to see why they would be attracted to these locations during the middle of the 19th Century. I cannot find anything on The Packhorse Inn, which no longer seems to exist, and perhaps Newton Place was their home. They also lived for some time in Howtown, Martindale, also remote, but I am wondering if there was some tourism at the time in the form of hill walkers, ramblers who would have stayed at the inns. Could anyone help me please?

Armed Forces / THE WARTIME MEMORIES PROJECT WEBSITE
« on: Sunday 25 August 13 15:43 BST (UK)  »
Does anybody know if the above website is still active? About a month or so ago I submitted the story of one of my ancestors who had been held prisoner at Stalag 18A, Wolfsburg together with some photos. The article has not been posted on the site, I have received no acknowledgment nor has there been any response to a couple of follow up emails I sent. I know that the Memories Project is dependent on voluntary contributions and it would be a great pity if it is no longer being maintained.

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / The death of Thomas ETCHES
« on: Saturday 09 February 13 12:26 GMT (UK)  »
I would be very pleased if somebody could provide any details about the death of Thomas Etches. All I can discover so far is that on the 6th November 1836 he was buried at the age of 35 at St. Philip's, Birmingham. As Thomas died at a young age and worked as a stonemason I am wondering if his death was accidental, in which case I assume that a coroner's report may have been issued. I had thought that his death may have been reported in a local newspaper but I'm not sure whether one existed at that time. I believe that the Birmingham Post was not published until 1857.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Works Outing
« on: Monday 29 October 12 18:04 GMT (UK)  »
Could anybody give me an idea of the date and venue of this photo please. The man seated in the centre was born in 1868 and died in 1946. This looks like a works outing to me and as he appears to be the centre of attention I wonder if it could be connected to his retirement, which at 65, would date the photo as 1933. Alternatively it could just be that he was the oldest employee.

The venue is likely to be on the South Coast as he lived in south London. Possibly Brighton, but Hastings and Margate are possibilities.

Many thanks.

World War One / EAST SURREY REGIMENT - 2nd Battalion
« on: Wednesday 17 October 12 13:10 BST (UK)  »
Could someone help me with this problem please ? I am researching  John T. Plant who I think enllisted in the East Surreys in 1908.He was Pte. 9453 and in the 2nd Battalion. The 1911 Census shows that he was in the Burma and Andaman Islands but the Battalion subsequently transferred to Chaubattia in N. India and it was from here that it returned to Devonport in December, 1914 to take part in the Great War. A book I have read about Famous Regiments seems to back this up but on the Queens Royal Surrey website it states that the 2nd Battalion was in South Africa at the outbreak, arrived in England on the 19th September and went on to Zeebrugge. Yet I know that Pte. Plant arrived at Le Havre on the 19th January 1915 which is where the 1st Battalion disembarked. One might suppose that he switched battalions but that doesn't seem feasible to me.

World War Two / FRANK ETCHES
« on: Thursday 11 October 12 15:12 BST (UK)  »
Hello, can anyone help me find out more about my Uncle Frank's Army career in WW2 please ?.  Unfortunately I have very little to go on. He was born at 30 Inman Road, Wandsworth, London SW on the 28th January 1913. I can remember his showing me photos of him and his comrades in India and a cousin of mine says that at the very end of the War he went to the Far East.
I am attaching a photo of him. If I could find out the name of his regiment that would help me no end.
Many thanks.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / HELP WITH DATING PLEASE
« on: Tuesday 25 September 12 15:36 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone help me me with dating this photo please? It's a family group with the father and mother seated in the front. It must have been taken before May 1911 because that's the year the father died. It looks as it was a special family occasion and I wonder if it was taken in 1909 to celebrate the silver wedding anniversary of the elderly couple as they married in 1859. Or could it have been taken in 1900 to celebrate the new century ? Behind the couple are some of their children. The original is on thick cardboard but there is no reference to any photographer. It may be of help to note that the son standing on the left was born in 1868.

World War Two / R.A.F. BRANSCOMBE
« on: Tuesday 25 September 12 13:58 BST (UK)  »
I have just got hold of my late father's R.A.F. service record and must say that I am finding it a bit confusing despite having a list of common military abbreviations to accompany it. My late father, Herbert Etches, joined the R.A.F. in July 1941 as an AC2 but was trained to become a radar operator. There is an early entry on his service record stating "2/8 Wg AMES BRANSCOMBE" which I believe may have been a radar centre. Would he have been sent here to train ? He ended up stationed in the Shetlands towards the end of the war as a radar operator I believe. If anyone can throw any light on Branscombe I would be very grateful.
