Ireland / Cillini. Burial grounds of the shunned and unbaptised
« on: Wednesday 04 June 14 09:01 BST (UK)  »
Interesting article on Cillini

Final burial places for the unbaptised or those deemed unworthy

When I look at all the names in my tree
or the number of children referred to on census returns
I always wonder where they went and unfortunately
this is probably the answer for some

In Tuam Co. Galway there is a small plot of ground that is the last resting place of almost 800 children.

Catherine Corless, a local historian and genealogist, was researching a home for unmarried mothers, run by the Bon Secours order, from the 1920s until the 1960s; when she discovered death records for 796 children, ranging from infants to children up to the age of nine. They were born to mothers from Galway, Mayo and possibly Roscommon.

She could find no record of their burial in graveyards in the county, or in areas where the mothers had been from and has concluded they are buried in this small plot that has been tended by a local couple for many years.

I am inserting two links to media coverage of the story;  LINK 1 and LINK 2

You will see that there are contact details in the articles if you require further information
as Catherine has compiled a full list of the names and is campaigning to erect a plaque in their memory.

On October 30th 1914 fifteen Belgian refugees arrived in Monaghan, Ireland from Mechelen/Malines, south of Antwerp. After the war they returned to home to Belgium.

If anyone in Mechelen could help identify descendants of the refugees who came to Monaghan town
or if they know of any Belgian refugees who spent time in the county, please contact:
Clogher Historical Society/Cumann Seanchais Chlochair through their website www.clogherhistory.ie

Thank you

Galway / John Mannion of Woodlawn
« on: Wednesday 28 August 13 15:05 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know more about Sgt. John Mannion
of the 5th Battalion, Connaught Rangers, Reg#1445?

He is shown on army records as born in Galway;
his residence is given as Woodlawn, Co. Galway; and
he was killed in action on August 21 1915 in Gallipoli, Turkey.

The records do not give a date of birth for John but presumably it must be before 1887 CORRECTION 1897
(i.e. age 18 in 1915)
There is no-one by the name Mannion on the 1901 or 1911 census
in either Woodlawn or the DED of Killaan
In 1901 there is a Manning Family
By 1911 Bridget Manning is living with her married daughter.

Any help establishing who John's parents and ancestors were would be appreciated.

World War One / John Mannion Connaught Rangers 1445 & Strange coincidence
« on: Saturday 24 August 13 14:57 BST (UK)  »
The only details I can find on Sgt. John Mannion Reg#1445 are (link),
and from another site that his residence was given as Woodlawn, Co. Galway and his place of birth Galway, but I cannot find anything further.

I am aware that many records were destroyed but where could I look for more information on this man?

Herein lies my interest
I posted last year (Link) about a strange coincidence in my researching

I found that my children had two distant relatives that had died on August 21 1915 in Galipoli.
each was from a different side of the family, i.e. one maternal and one paternal,
each was from a different part of Ireland, Roscommon & Dublin;
and most likely would not have known each other,
both joined the Connaught Rangers;
one in Dublin before the Boer War
and one in St. Helen's, England for the First World War.

Andrew Mannion 24.02.1885-21.08.1915 Reg#620 was my paternal Grand uncle
Richard Lee/Leigh 10.03.1871-21.08.1915 Reg#3216 was my OH's maternal GGF's 1st cousin

In looking at these men last week, I found reference to the sixty men who died that same day
including John Mannion.
My maternal GGGM was from Woodlawn, Co. Galway and had a sister who married a man named MANNION; I have not investigated this line but my interest is now piqued as Woodlawn very small townland and Mannion an uncommon name there. On the 1911 census there were 77 residents in Woodlawn and no Mannions; there were 632 residents in the parish of Killaan and no Mannions, and just one named MANNING.

If I prove a connection it would make it an even more bizarre coincidence to think my children would have three (unrelated to each other) relations to have died in the same regiment on the same day in the same place in 1915! But I don't want to go off on a wild goose chase either!! ;D

Any and comments or pointers looked for

Family History Beginners Board / Renewing a subscription?? Different costs
« on: Friday 14 June 13 18:10 BST (UK)  »
I have received two emails to renewal my subscription to a popular research site

I have a subscription to an Irish version and a UK version of the site and intended on renewing to get a world wide subscription to just one - I am told the same information is available from both.

Anyway my dilemma is (and I have queried this) why is there a price difference?! With no reply to date.

Normal UK subscription is £159.95 / €188.38
Normal Irish subscription £152.79 / €179.95
which I can understand with fluctuating exchange rates

However the two "offers" I received have different prices and not only that but if I just renew my .co.uk subscription it will be cheaper! By €42.89 or £36.39

I know what I am going to do but just wondered had anyone come across this before?
I can't work it out - I know I am a bit skeptical of offer but when 10% off costs more......
