The Lighter Side / Have you ever found someone and wondered about them??
« on: Sunday 15 August 10 09:38 BST (UK)  »
Following on from comments in "you know you are you addicted.." in particular Heitch's daughter who felt sad for people she didn't know and LizzieW's Dad's friend John.

This is my adopted boy:
When the Air India Flight 182 crashed off Cork in 1985 all the passengers died. 198 people were lost at sea and 131 bodies were recovered.  There is a memorial in Cork at Sheep's Head Peninsula for all those lost. There is just one person from the crash buried in Dublin. In Hindu tradition babies are not cremated and this one little 15-month old boy was buried in Glasnevin with an inscription Air India Child. I don't get to Glasnevin often but I still often think of this child - I found out his name - It is Ankur Seth. His parents and siblings also died in the crash. He is so far from both Canada and India, but he is not forgotten.

My grandfather always said that "if you pass a church go in and visit; so on the last day the Lord won't have to ask who is it!" Well I have extended that to remembering forgotten people I have found in graveyards.

Have you someone that is not related that you have found while family searching and keep in mind??

Where would I be best to follow up for the records of Bridget Byrne from Ballyman (border of Dublin & Wicklow)
She married Philip Kearney in 1883 and died in 1891 aged 35
Her father is given as James on their marriage cert but I can find no birth cert or death cert although I know she is buried in Deansgrange.
To backtrack further on this line I need a lead - please

JOHN BURKE Poyntz Lane b. March 7th 1859 d. July 20th 1901 Brazier/Tin Smith/Copper Smith
married on May 19th 1879 in St. Mary's, Kilkenny
JANE KEEFE Guard Lane

John was the son of John Burke who married Elizabeth Doolan (aka Dowling and Dualaing) on October 24th 1851

Jane was the daughter of James Keefe and Judith Grogan for whom I can find no records, however, James is described as a soldier and I have found some records that may be him)

The BURKE family are shown on the 1901 and 1911 Census - John as the head writes his name as Bourke and then signs it Burke - both spellings keep cropping up as well as Burk.

In 1901 the whole family are living at 15 Garden Row, Kilkenny, with John and Jane are:
1. Elizabeth b. 03.Mar.1880 (1901 21/1911 not shown) NO DEATH RECORD BETWEEN 1901 & 1911
2. Julia b. 18.Apr.1883 d. 27.Apr.1901
3. Thomas b. 14.Aug.1885 m. Johanna McSweeney 20.Sep.1915
4. Catherine/Kathleen b. 29.Apr.1888 m. Philip Kearney 22.Apr.1923 d. 14.Jan.1960
5. Mary Jane b. 01.Oct.1890 (1901 11/1911 not shown) NO DEATH RECORD BETWEEN 1901 & 1911
6. John b. 25.Feb.1893 (1901 8/1911 17)
7. Joseph b. 17.May.1895 m. Margaret Leahy 01.Feb.1828
8. Frances b. 02.Oct.1899 d. 05.May.1903
on the civil birth record Frances is female on the baptismal record Francis is male???

By 1911 Jane describes herself as having had eight children of whom four were still alive. Four are listed with her: Thomas; Mary Kate (presumably Kathleen); John and Joseph

If anyone can help find Elizabeth and Mary Jane or shed any further light on this family I'd appreciate it

(Kathleen Kearney's death notice in Jan 1960 stated she was regretted by her brothers and sisters which has thrown me a little unless they meant sisters-in-law)

This quest is to find information on my FIL's sister and I am aware that she may by still living so my post is at least cautious!

If alive she will be 87 tomorrow as she was born on June 30th 1923 in the Rotunda Hospital but her parents were living in Inchicore/Kilmainham area.
She married on August 3rd 1942 (husband born 1918) and had a number of children in the 1940s and 1950s. I have a couple of names from LDS website and back of old photos.

She is/was my FIL's elder and only sister - he, Patrick Philip, was born on March 12th 1926 and died July 12th 1990.

If the names ring a bell with anyone I'd appreciate information on this lady and her family

My grandfather was listed in 1901 as living with his brothers and sisters on the 1901 census
Michael - head of family aged 23
Mary Anne - 20; John - 14; Andrew - 12; Bridget - 9
I now know that their father Andrew and brother James died in 1894
Andrew was described as a widower so presumably his wife Brigid (Macdermott) died between 1886 (birth of youngest) and 1894

My grandfather was John and I know his life story

His brother Andrew was in Manchester in 1911 and died in WWI

His sister Bridget was a nurse and became a matron of a hospital in England and died there in the 1950s or 1960s but I know no more. It is believed she may have been in Bristol or at least the south of England

I know nothing of Mary Anne

I have also uncovered other siblings a second Mary Anne who was born in 1872 and presumably died, Honor born 1873, Patrick born 1875, Eleanor 1882 but I can find no records of death or marriage.

I know that Michael married Honor (Norah) O'Donnell on April 18th 1903
They had a son James Joseph in 1904 who is listed with his grandparents in 1911
Norah is listed in Beltra, Croaghmoyle, Co. Mayo in 1911 and described as a widow
From this I can ony assume Michael died between 1903 and 1911 but I have so far failed to find a death record for him

Any suggestions where to look further??
or information or any part of this family welcome

Armed Forces / *COMPLETED* Benjamin JOHNS 58th Regiment 1860-1885
« on: Tuesday 08 June 10 15:47 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for any information or guidance to locate more information on an ancestor named BENJAMIN JOHNS

When he married ANNE REILLY on September 14th 1863 in the Parish Church of St Peter (CoI) he was described as a Corporal in the 58th Regiment Beggars Bush
His father's name was given on his marriage cert as Benjamin

He was a Lance Corporal when his son Richard was born in Sept 1864 in Parsonstown, King's County (now Birr, Co. Offaly, Ireland)
His son Benjamin was born in Sealkote, West Bengal, India in August 1871
and his son William was born in Nowshera, West Bengal, India; although the 1901 census states Cherat
Three more siblings were born in Dublin in 1878, 1881 and 1882
There was a seventh sibling that I have not located to date

Benjamin died on October 8th 1885 aged 45 approximately in the Meath Hospital, Dublin; he was living in Harold's Cross. He is buried in Mount Jerome Cemetery.

If anyone has information, or can tell me where to look with the amount of info that I have I would appreciate it.

Dublin / Kearneys Inchicore/Stillorgan
« on: Monday 07 June 10 09:24 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information on a KEARNEY family who lived in the general Dun Laoghaire area in the late 1880s and early 1900s. They are my husbands ancestors.

The family is listed in Stillorgan on the 1901 census and in 16A Rock Road, Blackrock on the 1911 census. (F) Philip, (W 2nd) Esther, (sons) James, Philip, Daniel, Johney, (daughters) Sarah, Esther and a cousin Rosy Brien.

Philip was my husband's grand father and was born in Stillorgan in 1885 and died in Blackrock in 1947.

I have now sourced the birth certificates for Philip's family and found that he had eleven children of whom five died in childhood. The remaining six were JAMES; PHILIP (husband's grandfather); DANIEL; and step-siblings JOHN; SARAH and ESTHER.

His parents were possibly Daniel Kearney and Elizabeth Toole of Little Bray.
His first wife and Bridget Byrne (daughter of James Byrne/mother unknown of Ballyman, Rathmichael) c1856-1891. Philip remarried in 1892 and his second wife was Esther Carty/Carthy (daughter of Timothy Carthy and Sarah ?? possibly Toole or Grundy) 1866-1925.

Philip Senior was gardener and worked in Glen Druid, Beaufield Mews and Ruby Lodge (later renamed Kensington House) that I am sure of. They lived in various locations between Stillorgan and Bray throughout their lives and were in Carlow in 1886 when Daniel was born.

I have traced members of James' family and I know that John died in WWI.

Esther Kearney married Charles Gallagher (Gardener); both of 16 Rock Road on October 18th 1923 in Booterstown Church

Sarah Kearney married John Vickers (labourer) of Bray, Co. Wicklow on May 3rd 1933 in Cabinteely Church

Daniel Kearney married Anne Smith of 7 Anglesea Buildings, Kingstown on July 13th 1913 in the Church of St. Michael Kingstown No. 1
Daniel lived at 52 Patricks Street Dun Laoghaire in 1920 when his father died and that Sarah lived at St. Catherine's, Rock Road, Blackrock when her mother died in 1925.

My FIL was Patrick Philip B. 1926 d. 1990, His sister was Teresa b. 1923 m. 1942 Laurence Price - no more information

If there is anyone out there who can add more either going back, sideways or forward I'd appreciate it - thanks!

Dublin / Staffordstown?
« on: Saturday 05 June 10 08:51 BST (UK)  »
I have a death certificate for a child, Mary Elizabeth Kearney, that died in the 1890s and is buried in Deans Grange
Her family lived in Stillorgan but the address on the cert is Staffordstown, Glencullen for the child and the informant who was a Mary Anne Murphy

Does this ring any bells with anyone from their research?
Mary Elizabeth Kearney's Mother was Bridget Byrne born in Ballyman in 1855 approx.
Her father was James and her husband was Philip Kearney.

On the 1901 census there is a Mary Anne Murphy living in Ballinacullia could this be Staffordstown?
