Lancashire / Re: Kirkham workhouse records

Yes, he remembered being there as a child. He even went back as an adult years later looking for information about where he was from because his employer needed it as he worked at Fleetwood docks, don't know what year that was and I don't know if he did find anything out. An old aunty once mentioned he thought he might have been placed into the workhouse by his mother and/or grandmother who may have been called Mary.
No, I can't find him in the 1911 census. I was expecting to find him in either the workhouse/cottage homes for children in Kirkham, or working on some farm either in Kirkham or Over Wyre.

From an old family story i suspect his mother  may have been a mary kearns or just mary, the birth reg must be under the fathers name so i think i might be looking for some time or until i get a chance to find anything in workhouse admissions.
Might be some time before the answer comes, i belive there is info out there some place that will help sooner or later.

Frank Kearns died feb 1966 in Fleetwood aged 71, on his death cert he is named as Frank francis kearns by his wife who was called Ella victoria kearns and her maiden name was Baxter.
They married in blackpool in 1920.

Thats the real problem with my grand father, he never knew where he came from and never knew why he ended up in the workhouse, as an adult he was known as  a Frank Kearns who lived in Fleetwood.
I suspect that if he does have a birth cert it may be under another last name, hench trying to find any more info about him in the workhouse records....if any at all.

Hi all
Can anyone help, looking for any info regards Kirkham workhouse in Lancashire, looking for the name Kearns in the records , admissions etc.
My grand father is named as George Kearns in the workhouse in the 1901 census aged about 5 years, any other info about him or any other Kearns if one is found  , between 1894 and 1901  or there abouts.

Kind regards
David Kearns

Hi Tina, that's great news. Yes, my grandfather was in the R E. My aunt once said that he thought he may have come from the other side of Bolton, Lancashire. She also mentioned an Indian connection, something to do with the East India Company or something like that. So this leads me to believe that he did find out something when he returned to the workhouse as an adult looking for his birth details or workhouse admission records.
When my grandad died in 1966, his name on his death certificate was Frank Francis Kearns. This was what my grandmother gave the registrar.

Bye for now
Dave

Have found the george albert kearns born 1893 in warrington in the ireland census for 1901 and 1911 , so that one is not my grandfather.
So who is and where is the birth for george kearns who shows up in the kirkham workhouse on his own, world war one records has him signing up in kirkham as Frank Kearns in 1915.
If the 1901 census is correct he was born in preston, but no record exists....why?

Hi Tina, thanks for the message and kind welcome. I have looked at the Preston connection regarding the 1901 census, but in my searches which even included a visit to Preston records office about 10 years ago when I lived in England, nothing could be found, hence my searching elsewhere in the UK. I think I can account for other Kearns boys born a few years either side of 1895, but can't account for the George Albert Kearns born in Warrington in 1893. I don't have the birth certificate but may have to send off for it. An old story from an old aunty ( now passed away) mentioned that my grandfather may have tried to find out some information about this many years ago having to produce a birth certificate to work on the docks in Fleetwood, Lancashire. I don't know how much he ever found out but in the story his mother and/or grandmother may have been called Mary.

Trying to solve a family mystery, where did my grandfather come from.
He only knew he came from the workhouse at Kirkham in lancashire and spent many years in the cottage homes for children.
As an adult he was known as Frank Kearns who lived in Fleetwood and died there in 1966 however i can only find him named as a George Kearns in the 1901 census in the workhouse age 5, which would put his birth if correct at 1896 yet his grave states he died age 71 which puts him back to about 1895, the truth is he never really knew his birthdate and could have been a slightly different age.
I think i have found a George Kearns born in 1893 in Warrington who appears to have no more info about him that i can find later, hench the interest.
Does anybody have a way to look at the warrington Kearns etc etc as i have no idea who the parents might have been and if this may lead to something interesting, thanks very much Dave Kearns New Zealand.
