Suffolk Lookup Requests / Re: BRIGHTON in Mendham
« on: Tuesday 15 June 10 18:28 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for looking. Years ago I was put in touch with 2 probable cousins in England. One went and copied the parish records of Mettingham and later I asked someone to check them to confirm. So I have all the chr. of the children of Wm. and Mary Raven. I feel I'm about ready to put them in my records. Just waiting to learn more about the John in Mendham as I've now found another researcher with James and Rebecca as parents of our John.

Thanks again.

I saw that one also--would like to know more about it. Tombstone shows either 10 or 19 Jan, 1801. Trouble is the census for Ontario for 1851 and 1861 also look like he was born in 1801. Mett. parish records have bap. 23 Feb., 1799. Maybe he didn't know exact age as you say or whoever gave info. for tombstone didn't know. Wife had already died, but several children still around.

Another tie in for Mett. is the daughter that gave info. in later life also said John's brother, George, owned Duke's Bridge. I found George on the 1841 census as a publican living at Duke's Bridge in Bungay (near Mett.). He was also at Duke's Bridge in 1851 and his birth place was Mettingham. There was a Robert in St. Andrew (near Mett., Bungay, Shipmeadow, Mett.) born in Mett. and descendants think he was a brother of John. Robert and wife were witnesses at John's marriage.

Forgot--some Brighton researchers I've been in contact with think our John is the one born in Mendham based on the IGI, so I'm trying to get that straightened out.

I think he was son of Wm. and Mary Raven Brighton baptised in 1799. My John married Sophia Edwards in Shipmeadow in 1823 and lived and had children in Ilketshall St. Andrew before moving to Ontario, Canada in 1835. His birth date on his tombstone in Ontario is 1801, so off by 2 years from date in Mett.

Info. given by a daughter of John and Sophia around 1920 of names of his siblings match those in Mettingham. And she gave names of parents as Wm. and Mary.

I can't figure out why dates of birth are 2 years different, so I haven't put it down in my records yet.

I agree it most likely is, but I'm hopng the parish record will prove it conclusively. I have no idea if there were other Brighton families in Mendham in 1801 that might have also had an infant son named John. The parish records will probably show that also.

Yes, I hope this record gives some additional info. I contacted a person who will do a look-up in the parish records, so I'll find out fairly soon I believe.

Right, that would be great. I've put a query on the rootsweb.com mailing list for Brown Co., Wisconson and hope I will get an answer. Then follow-up.

I have tried to find items in the newspaper of the nearest larger city as the town where he lived didn't have a  newspaper yet. The newspaper from the larger city had several articles abot his death in the Civil War with a military slant. How brave he was, his men appreciated him, praise from the leaders etc. But no obit. as such. I may borrow more papers on inter-library-loan and look for something on a funeral because if there is such an article it might name relatives that attended.
