Cornwall Lookup Requests / GILL TREWIN Family in Cambourne, Cornwall
« on: Tuesday 20 March 12 19:39 GMT (UK)  »
My Grandmother, Elizabeth Mary Rubina Uren b. august 7, 1896 of Cambourne, married Horace Gill b. October 29, 1986  of Cambourne.  They married at Ellis Island in the 1920's when she took a boat over to America to join her fiance, Horace, who left earlier on his own to seek a place to live and work.  She was not allowed to leave Ellis Island, until they were legally married.  Horace had come to America to find a job and new life for them due to the tin mines closing down.

Horace's parents were Charles Gill and Maud Trewin.  Maud may have had a twin, Laura.

When I was in Cambourne in 1990, I was amazed at how many telephone listings there were for GILL.

I have a feeling some of the descendents are still in Cambourne.

anyone?

Thank you so much for all the help I had finding Elizabeth Mary Rubina Uren's roots with the Penpraze families.

sincerely,

Linda Trestrail

Thank you so much for all this information on my great great granpparents.   I'm very happy and pleased that I can now add these names into my Mother's side (Penpraze, Uren) of the Family Tree Maker.  This has been easy with Roots Chat helpers.

I've been working on my  Father's side (Trestrail & Knight) and this has been more time consuming but with help from members here, it's been a pleasure.

Now to search for my mother's other side of the family  GILL and TREWIN from Cambourne.

sincerely,

Linda Trestrail

WOW this is awesome.  I flew my Aunt Ruth and Uncle Alf over to New York in November 1973 to stay 6 weeks and re-unite with  Elizabeth Mary Rubina Uren Gill - sisters - after not seeing each other for 45 years.  I never knew her name was Alicia.

Ruth and Alf had the time of their lives.  I was only 23 and scraped up money to put them on a train from Falmouth to London and fly them to New York.

I never knew my Uncle Stanley had another name.  They all flipped their names around and used their middle names, it looks like.

And I never knew my grandmother had a twin that died.  Ruby Ann in 1897???  I just called my aunt, Barbara Helen Gill, age 82, and she was born on St. Michael's Mount in 1930.  She never heard of her mother having a twin sister.  She also remembers her grandfather, James Uren being a very distinquished and quiet gentleman who loved horses.

I saw that he was a BEADLE and looked it up.  My aunt Barbara did not know that he worked for a church or an orphanage.

I am so happy to be in these rooms with such helpful, patient, talented people so willing to help others find their roots.  Thank you so much.

Oh thank you so much.  Here is what I have pieced together ....so far.  I am documenting my grandmother's lineage.  She is Elizabeth Mary Rubina Uren b. August 7, 1896.

Her mother was Elizabeth Ellen Penpraze, b. 1870;  a tailor of men's clothing. Her father was James Uren, b. 1870; a market house caretaker on Union St. in Cambourne.

They had 7 children but I don't know birth order.
Norman - moved to Adelaide
Elizabeth Mary Robina  b. August 7, 1896
Raymond -
Gordon -
Stuart -
Ruth Ann - married Alfred Hughes and lived in Falmouth
Stanley - moved to Brooklyn, NY

Oh thanks so much for this information.  I had found some information on a Penpraze born in 1794.

An Edward Penpraze b. 1794 married a Maria Thomas b. 1797  in 1816 when they were 22 and 19.
They had 5 children:
William 1819
John 1826
Henty 1830
Elizabeth 1834
Amelia 1840

I think this William (1819) could have married an Elizabeth ??? around 1838 - 40.

Is this possible?

so grateful for your input.

My grandmother was born Elizabeth Mary Robina Uren - August 7, 1886Her mother was Elizabeth Penpraze who married James Uren. They had 7 children.
Norman Uren - went to Adelaide, AU
Stanley Uren - went to NY
Elizabeth Mary Robina Uren - went to NY & married Horace Gill from Cambourne
Raymond Uren
Gordon Uren
Stuart Uren
Ruth Ann Uren married Alfred Hughes and lived in Falmouth.

Enclosed is a picture of ELizabeth Penpraze Uren - she was a tailor of men's clothing in Cambourne.

This is so impossible for me to trace my maternal side of the family.  2 days of endless searching. Please, anyone?

Hi Kathleen,

So nice to speak with you.  I'm writing down on my printed family tree copy of:

 The 6 DESCENDANTS OF JOHN TRESTRAIL  1784 - 1824  and Elizabeth Hosking 1792 - 1850

Their 4th child, Willliam Trestrail, (son), born 1818 - 1904 and his wife, Eliza Powning, had 5 children. Their 4th son, Thomas G. Powning Trestrail born 1861 in Phillack, Hayle, married Matilda Goldsack in 1882.   They had 2 children, a son and daughter.

I have penciled in what you have posted.  I'm a bit confused as to whether or not William George (son) born in Gateshead, Durham, could be the twin of Caroline Charlotte (daughter) born in 1882 St. Agnes, Cornwall.  There are two birthplaces very far from one another.

Going back to my roots, William and Eliza Powning had 5 children:  Elizabeth Ann Trestrail born 1849, Mary Jane Trestrail born 1844, Charlotte Powning Trestrail born 1855, Thomas G. Powning born 1861, and Eliza Emily (Minnie) born 1866.  One of these children is my grandfather, Percival Powning Trestrail's  parent.  On the census, I only have William and Eliza as his grandparents.  I'm sure Eliza Emily (Minnie) born 1866, was his mother, but no record of his father.

Thomas Powning Trestrail and Matilda Goldsack would have been my grandfather, Percival Powning Trestrail's aunt and uncle. Both my grandfather and Thomas Powning were born in Phillack, Hayle.

I need to put all this down on my Family Tree Maker and see how it considers us related.  I'm still trying to get Family Tree Maker to allow me to interface with Ancestry.com.

Hi Kathleen,

So nice to meet you.  There's lots more Trestrail lines than I ever imaged.

Going back to late 1700's,  John Trestrail (1784 - 1824) married Elizabeth Hosking (1792 - 1850) and they had 6 children: William (1818 - 1904); John (b. 1811); Richard (b. 1812); Elizabeth (b. 1815); James (b. 1820); & Thomas (b. 1823).

William Trestrail married Eliza Powning and they had 5 children: Eliza Emily (Minnie) (b. 1866); Elizabeth Ann (b. 1849); Mary Jane (b. 1844); Charotte Powning (b. 1855); and Thomas G. Powning (b. 1861).

Eliza Emily (Minnie) Trestail was (I believe) my great grandmother - no record of a grandfather, yet. The census states she lived at home with her parents, William & Eliza Trestrail & so did a grandson, Percival Powning Trestrail - that is my grandfather.  I need to get a copy of my grandfather, Percival Powning Trestrail's birth certificate - (1885 - 1968). Percival spent  his  childhood ages of 5 - 15 with his grandparents and went into the British navy as a teenager - he told us at age 14 he was in the military.

Thomas Trestrail (b. 1823) would have been my grandfather's great uncle or my great great uncle.

I have been told that there are 3 lines of Trestrails that came from Redruth.

Originally,  Trestrail  means homestead of mat or carpet maker. Place name Trestrail, Probus, spelt Trestrael 1278

Are we connected to John Trestrail and Elizabeth Hosking?

Linda
