Can you get a marriage cert for 1816? I'd assumed it was just the entry you can see if parish registers which just gives names of bride & groom - but perhaps I'll look into this a bit more. Thanks for suggestion.

I have information that Simeon Yewdall married Margaret Hodgson on 15 April 1816 in Lancaster (Parish records for St. Mary 1813-1819, Lancaster Film no: 1526200), but I'm currently doing most of my research online as I live in the south of England. Don't think I've found anything that gives any middle names for Simeon or Margaret (although I still need to order death certificates). Other people who've been researching & have links to Yewdall through marriage (Bickerstaffe family) have also come to a brick wall at this point.

As Simeon's occupation was a gardener, I'm assuming he probably worked on a large estate (e.g. Halton Hall). Not sure what buildings/gardens would have existed in Poulton-Le-Sands around 1820 where he could have been employed. At some point I intend to see if Lancashire Public records have any records from local estates giving lists of servants etc from around this time - just in case this throws up any clues.

Thanks Brian. Yes, I've managed to trace quite a few of my ancestors through this site - mainly baptisms of children of Simeon & Maragaret at Poulton-Le-Sands & Halton. They are sometimes recorded as Yewdale here. James Yewdall (son of Simeon) & Isabella are also in my tree & have entries on this site.

I've noticed that Yewdale also crops up around Hawkshead on this site, so at some point am going to delve a bit more deeply into people in this area.

However, I've revisited Simeon. Interestingly on the 1851 Census  for Skerton, Lancaster (HO107/2272 Folio 71 Page 22; GSU 87299) he is shown as Simon Yewdall (Age 65 b. 1786) & being born in Bradford. His wife Margaret (nee Hodgson) Aged 62 b. 1788 is also shown as coming from Bradford.

The 1841 census also suggests they were born outside Lancashire.

Intriguing!

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / CANNING

Believe my ancestor to be John Canning b. 15 August 1784 in Frampton-upon-Severn, son of John Canning & Ann Hewlett (b. 24 November 1754 Frampton). Later moved to Bristol.

Trying to establish if the John Canning married to Ann is the person referred to in memorial inscription Frampton-on-Severn Churchyard which refers to: John Canning d. 1798 (aged 41), Ann d. 1811 (aged 56 - tallies with Hewlett), Esther Verny (aged 1) d. 27 November 1797 &  Mary 10 October 1843 (aged 56).

Interested in any other information relating to Canning family ancestors pre 1800 in Frampton (or elsewhere - possibly Warks?).

Barbara

Thank you for that tip - I'll definitely look into it. I see you have the surname Greenwood as one of your interests. This is believed to be the maiden name of James Yewdall's wife Isabella.

My grandfather was Alfred Yewdall (b. 1907). His parents were James Yewdall (b. 1881 Millom) & Elizabeth Ripley (b. 1884) & they had 2 other sons.

The parents of James Yewdall were Edward Yewdall (b. 1857 Lancaster) & Jane Jackson (b. 1861 Millom). Their other children were: Albert (b. 1884 South Heaton or Heston?), Henry(b. 1886), Agnes (b. 1888), David (b. 1889), John (b. 1897) & Thomas (b. 1892). These children were mainly registered in Scotsforth.

Edward was the son of James Yewdall (b. 1818/21) & Isabella (b. 1824). Their other children were: David (b. 1851), Mary Jane (b. 1853), Janet (b. 1855), Margaret (b. 1859), William (b. 1862). Edward married Isabella at Settle - GRO Qtr 2 1850 23 628. It seems she may have come from Laycock or Settle or Long Preston - presumed to be daughter of Edward + Jane Greenwood (b. 1796)  living in Long Preston on 1841 Census HO 107/1321.

This James was the son of Simeon & Margaret Yewdall - mentioned below - birth registered in Poulton-Le-Sands or Halton ( I would need to go through my records to verify which).

In early C19th family lived in Halton. By 1841 in Church Street, Lancaster, then living around Lancaster (e.g. Penny Street, De Vitre Street), Scotforth & Skerton.

I am researching the Yewdall family who lived in Lancashire (around Halton, Skerton & Lancaster ) in the C19th. I have managed to trace back to:
Simeon Yewdall, a gardener, (b.1786) & Margaret Hodgson (b1788) - they possibly both came from Bradford or Blackburn (believed to be outside Lancashire), who married on 15 April 1816 at St. Mary, Lancaster (Parish records St. Mary 1813-1819 , Lancaster Film no: 1526200).

Known children were:
Thomas (b. 1816), James (b.1818) , Henry (b.1819), David (b.1821), Mary (b.1822), Elizabeth (b.1825, Buried 1825), Margaret (b. 1827, Buried 1828), Simeon (b. 1830.Buried 1832). The children were baptised in Poulton-Le-Sands (near Morecambe) or Halton, Lancs. (shown as Dalton in some records) - have found these in parish records online.

Any information regarding birth place of Simeon or Margaret, their ancestors/siblings would be appreciated. (Also trying to find if any connection to Yewdalls of Calverley/Idle/Bradford, Yorkshire.)

Also interested in any local history information relating to business of James Yewdall who was a furniture dealer in Church Street, Lancaster. Business is reported as going in to liquidation in Liverpool Mercury 31 January 1880, following his death.
