Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Is this a wedding photo?
« on: Wednesday 05 April 23 14:08 BST (UK)  »
In another thread Viktoria mentioned a wedding photo, and it reminded me of one that I have:
In my grandparents’photo my grandmother is standing whilst grandad sits!
Emancipation had not yet arrived!
Viktoria.

These are my great grandparents, and I'd always assumed that they were posed like that because she was quite petite and it might have looked odd the other way round, but maybe for a time that was the way it tended to be done.

However, it had never occurred to me that it might be a wedding photo, but on checking my dating books, I now think it could well be. They married in 1883 when he was 28 and she was 26 - what do others think? (No restores, please - I'll ask if/when I need one.)

The Common Room / RootsWeb - hosted websites to become read-only
« on: Thursday 02 March 23 14:08 GMT (UK)  »
There's a notice at RootsWeb to the effect that the websites which they host will become read-only early next year, so anyone who wishes to keep their site active and updated will need to find another host. RootsWeb (and their owner, Ancestry) haven't as yet seen fit to notify me directly of this, as a site manager, but I've picked up a few messages about it elsewhere. The announcement is at

https://support.rootsweb.com/s/article/Retiring-and-Migrating-Portions-of-RootsWeb

The article also mentions forthcoming changes to their mailing list archives and WorldConnect trees, which take effect much sooner.

One implication of the change to hosted sites is that anyone who relies on data provided by one of them will need to get what they need in good time, in case the site manager decides to completely remove it instead.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / 1851 Census - HO107/2352 Folio Numbers
« on: Thursday 07 April 22 17:34 BST (UK)  »
I've just discovered an issue with folio numbers in the 1851 Census, relating to the Tadcaster Registration District (HO107/2352). This has been mentioned here before, but without any further investigation - https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=754807.msg6042950#msg6042950

My interest in this piece is with families named Wheatley in the village of Ulleskelf, for example Ann: at FindMyPast she is on folio 468 page 10, but the image at Ancestry has the 468 crossed out and replaced with 523. Consequently I was wondering which was the correct reference.

By looking at the piece description at TNA (https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C3763086) and comparing images throughout the piece I think this is what may have happened:

The numbering originally began with the village of Kirk Fenton (aka Church Fenton), where the first name listed is William Bennett, the station master. This was originally fo4 p1. The numbering then continued through the piece to (I think) Long Marston, which ended on fo681. These pages, with their numbering, were filmed, and the images are now at FindMyPast.

Later it was discovered that Sub-district 1 (Appleton Roebuck) had been missed out, so that was merged with the rest, with its folio numbers starting with 1. This section ends on fo55 p16. (As an aside, the final household is the Rectory in Bolton Percy, where the head is William Vernon Harcourt, who founded the British Association for the Advancement of Science and was the son of an Archbishop of York. The household also includes a son William, the future Home Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer.)

The folio numbers in all the later pages were amended, the difference between 'old' and 'new' being about 54 or 55 - it seems to vary a little - and Long Marston now finishes on fo736. There was a further filming after the numbers had been changed, and it is these images which are at Ancestry and The Genealogist.

For recording my own relatives in the renumbered section, it seems to me that I need to use the amended folio numbers, which are unambiguous. In contrast, FindMyPast's images have two versions of fo4 p1, for example - one starting with William Bennett (as above), and the other with the Francis Myers household in Acaster Selby. At Ancestry, William Bennett is now on fo59 p1.

Having worked all this out, I don't really need any help with it now, but I'm putting it down here in case it helps anyone else who's found it confusing.

The Common Room / Aerial Photo Explorer
« on: Tuesday 22 March 22 17:24 GMT (UK)  »
I read something today about Historic England's Aerial Photo Explorer (is it new?) It says it has 400,000 images from a total collection of over 6 million, and is being continually updated:

https://historicengland.org.uk/images-books/archive/collections/aerial-photos/

There's some overlap with the existing Britain From Above site (https://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/) - from a brief comparison, I think these may be the main differences:

* Britain From Above includes photos from the rest of the British Isles, not just England.
* The Aerial Photo Explorer has some English photos not on Britain From Above.
* APE allows you to zoom in to see a bigger image than the basic BFA. (It looks as though you can register and log in at BFA to get bigger pictures, but I haven't tried this.)

Both sites looks as though they would easily distract you from things you really ought to be doing.  8) ::) :-X

For Sale / Wanted / Events / WANTED: "B is for Bingley"
« on: Sunday 06 February 22 14:01 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know where I might be able to obtain a copy of "B is for Bingley: the second notebook" by Randal Bingley, please?

Randal Bingley wrote two books on the Bingley family. I've seen a copy of the first one ("Bingley - An English Family Notebook") and it's the second one that I'm now trying to track down. It was published privately in 1981 in a limited edition, so there won't be many copies around.

If no-one knows of one for sale, I'd also be interested to hear of any FHS etc which has a copy in its library. (I'm in Yorkshire, and the nearer the better.) I tried to get it on inter-library loan a few months ago, without success, but that wouldn't have included FHS's and the like.

Technical Help / Mobile broadband
« on: Friday 03 December 21 20:16 GMT (UK)  »
Normally we have broadband that comes down the phone line, but we're heading for a situation where that's not going to be possible, so we're looking into using mobile broadband for a time. This is all new territory, so please excuse some basic questions.

1. We're going to have temporary use of a smartphone (this too is a new experience, though we're familiar with tablets), and I see this can be used as an internet hotspot (it's 4G, and signal strength looks OK), provided we have sufficient credit/data allowance. The phone manual says you can connect other devices by USB or bluetooth, and more than one bluetooth device at once. At least some of the time we're going to want to have two devices connected at once (laptops and/or iPads), so would doubling up with bluetooth mean significantly worse performance? It's very unlikely there'd be any streaming etc going on - just things like checking emails, looking at RootsChat and other fairly light internet use.

2. Alternatively, do mobile dongle/mifi/router devices have anything to recommend them? Cost isn't an issue, but do they offer better performance?

3. Security - all this will happen within the home, so will our existing laptop internet security packages be sufficient? Do we need to be looking at things like VPNs as well, or just making sure the smartphone has its own protection as well? It's possible that we'd need to do some online banking or other secure business.

That's all that occurs to me at present, but I can't guarantee there won't be follow-up questions as well.

While reading around stories relating to the plans for a Church of England churchyards survey and database (see https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=852647.0 and  https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=852650.0) I came across the Church Heritage Record:

https://facultyonline.churchofengland.org/churches

There's a bit more about it at https://facultyonline.churchofengland.org/about-the-church-heritage-record

By using the more detailed search box you can specify the age, size and diocese (location) of a church, and I think that could potentially be of some use in tracking down those that we can't identify.

Having said that, I've just tried it with one which I think we were told was in Cumberland (ie Diocese of Carlisle) and not found it, though I might have got the parameters wrong. And now I can't find the thread it was in either - the photo was entitled "UID church 07.jpg". I've added a copy below.

Does anyone know when the 1921 census for the IOM will be released, please, and how we might be able to access it?

The Common Room / Library remote access to Ancestry - not much longer
« on: Monday 05 April 21 11:33 BST (UK)  »
During the pandemic my local library (Cheshire East) has been allowing members to access the library version of Ancestry from home. However, when I went to use it yesterday I found the following:

Quote
Unfortunately, due to a change in supplier, at home access to Ancestry will not be available after April.
However, you will be able to use it again at your library when we re-open.

You might like to check your own library's site to see if the same will happen there. I'm not sure what is meant by 'supplier', though I see that the link provided by Cheshire East initially goes to a page at ancestrylibrary.proquest.com before redirecting to one at ancestrylibraryedition.co.uk
