Lancashire / 1901 Census Brickwall-Hill Family
« on: Saturday 15 March 14 15:55 GMT (UK)  »
"My"Hill family consists of Richard (b. 1861 Liverpool -occupation-Ship's purser ), his wife Annie ( b. 1868 Shrewsbury ), daughter Alice ( b. 1890 Liverpool ), son Charles Victor ( b.1898 Liverpool ) and son Richard Henderson Hill ( b.1900 Birkenhead ).I can trace Annie and Alice living together on the 1891 census and almost the whole family on the 1911 census , but the 1901 census is giving me a headache. There's a Richard from Liverpool who is shown as a ship's fireman ( stoker? ), but I don't think that's "my" Richard. There's an 11 year old Alice shown who is living in Toxteth Park , but that's not "my" Alice as her father is shown as a James. I've found a 3 year old Charles Hill shown as a "boarder" but there's no sign of his mother Annie or other brother. As Richard was a sailor he may have been at sea when the census was taken, but the others? Has anyone got any suggestions?

An ancestor of mine and his large family are shown as living at Armoury Yard in Wenlock Road, Shrewsbury in the 1871 and 1881 censuses. His occupation was " Bricksetter". I'm guessing that he may have shared a property/ living space with other families? Does anyone know what that area of Shrewsbury was like at that time? Also were there brickworks nearby?

The Common Room / Richard Hill-Was He a Prisoner or Was He Away at Sea?
« on: Wednesday 05 March 14 19:42 GMT (UK)  »
Richard Hill was my gt-grandfather. He was born in Liverpool in 1861 and married in 1889. I am uncertain to his profession/ trade before his marriage. On his marriage certificate he is described as a "Mariner". On subsequent birth certificates and censuses he is described as a "Purser's Clerk" and "Ship's Storekeeper"so he obviously went to sea at some stage in his life. The 1871 census shows him as a 9 year old living with his parents. On the 1881 census the only likely Richard Hill I can find appears to have been serving Her Majesty's pleasure at Warwick Prison although that person is described as a "Wire Brush Maker". If my ancestor was actually at sea when the 1881 census was taken how can I find out? I have no idea which shipping lines / companies he worked for. Alternatively if my Richard Hill was actually in prison how can I find out what offence he committed? !

Lancashire / Ridgeway Street, Liverpool-in Edge Hill?
« on: Monday 24 February 14 12:16 GMT (UK)  »
I've just received the birth certificate for an ancestor born in 1890. The place of birth is stated as 42 Ridgeway Street which I believe no longer exists. However from Kelly's Street Directory for the period it seems it may have been in Edge Hill. Anybody know exactly where ?

Lancashire / The Quicks of Brook House Farm, Netherton, Merseyside.
« on: Wednesday 19 February 14 10:08 GMT (UK)  »
The Quicks were Joseph and Elizabeth ( née Dinsdale ) and their children Mary and Ellen. Joseph who was a farm labourer and Elizabeth married in 1908 and their daughters are believed to have married people called Smith and Hodgson respectively in the late 1930s. Joseph died in 1936 and Elizabeth is believed to have died in about 1966,possibly in Ormskirk or somewhere in North Merseyside ,although I can't confirm this yet as FreeBMD records don't cover that period yet. What I would like to know ( and I realise it's a long shot )is whether Elizabeth continued to live at Brook House Farm until her death or when did she move elsewhere ? Did she move to live with her children? Anybody know?

Essex / Isabel/ Isobel Thompson ( Nee Dinsdale ) b. 1882 Liverpool
« on: Friday 14 February 14 17:16 GMT (UK)  »
Just over a year ago several people on this site gave me very valuable information regarding my ancestor Isabel Dinsdale. ISABEL is the correct spelling. She married a Felix Thompson in London in 1908. I have found out that Felix died in Runwell Hospital in 1943. At that time he was living in Scratton Road in Southend on Sea. Despite my best efforts I have so far failed to find details of Isabel Thompson's death. However I have very recently discovered that an ISOBEL Thompson died in 1936 aged 54 ( which would give her the correct birth date of 1882 ) and her death was registered at Rochford sub- registration district which I believe is close to Southend on Sea ( not being local). Is anybody able to confirm whether this ISOBEL Thompson was Felix's wife?

Many thanks,

Denbighshire / Who were "all at Oakwood"?
« on: Sunday 14 April 13 20:41 BST (UK)  »
I have a photocopy of a page from " The North Wales Weekly News" from March 1941 in which there is a report of my great-grandfather's funeral at Colwyn Bay.He's buried in Bron-y-Nant cemetery. It gives a list of the mourners present and those businesses with which he had been connnected ( he was in the motor/garage trade )which sent floral tributes, etc.. I'm curious about one of these which is mentioned, it states " all at Oakwood". Does anybody have any idea what Oakwood was? I know it's a long time ago. I'm pretty certain it would be in the Colwyn Bay area- a large house? A hotel or guest house ? Some other sort of business ?

Essex / Runwell Emergency Hospital- Who was/were "The Occupier(s)" ?
« on: Saturday 23 March 13 11:55 GMT (UK)  »
I've just received the death certificate for someone who was retired and lived in Southend on Sea and died at Runwell Emergency Hospital during the Second World War ( 1943 ). The cause of death is given and certified by a doctor. However in the section which states " Signature, description and residence of informant" the Informant's name is given ( no relation to deceased as far as I can tell ) and it states " Occupier- Runwell Emergency Hospital ". As I'm not familiar with the area or events there during the War were there people living at the Hospital who were neither patients or staff ?
