London and Middlesex / 36 Regent Square in 1908
« on: Monday 18 March 13 11:00 GMT (UK)  »
The marriage certificate for an ancestor of mine states that she was living at 36 Regent Square when she was married in 1908. She wasn't originally from London and this wasn't a family address. As this is Central London and the area has probably changed greatly since 1908 I'm curious to find out what sort of property it was that she was living in. House ? House divided into flats ? Does anybody know?

Before I send for the relevant death certificate(s) I was wondering whether anyone is able to confirm whether Isabel(le) Thompson whose death was recorded in Croydon in 1939 aged 54 was married to Felix Joseph Thompson who died in 1943 in Chelmsford aged 66 ?

World War One / HMS Weymouth and the Second Battle of Durazzo ( 1918 )
« on: Friday 08 February 13 13:00 GMT (UK)  »
I am doing some research on someone ( Peter Ferguson ) who served on board this vessel during the Battle of Durazzo. The ship was struck by a torpedo and badly damaged. Several personnel were killed and I imagine some were injured including possibly Peter Ferguson. One thing I'm trying to find out is whether all of the badly injured would have been taken to naval hospitals such as the one at Chatham. As the First World War was then drawing to a close could some of the less badly injured have been sent straight home?

I am researching Peter Ferguson who may be an ancestor of mine. He was born in Newcastle in about 1892/3 and served in the Royal Navy during the First World War. One of the ships he served on was "HMS Weymouth". He is believed to have been on this vessel when it was involved in and damaged in the Battle of Durazzo ( Adriatic ) in 1918. He may have sustained injuries then. It's known that he died in the Royal Naval Hospital in Chatham in July 1921.He is buried in St. Andrews Cemetery in Newcastle. His parents were called Peter and Maria who lived at 31 Hunters Road.I should be grateful to hear from anyone who is able to provide any further information about him at all such as names of siblings, etc. I'm not sure whether he married or not.

Thanks,

The Common Room / Birth Certificate Query- Difference in Registration Dates
« on: Tuesday 05 February 13 17:09 GMT (UK)  »
My mother was illegitimate. There is no "Name/ Surname/ Rank or Profession of Father" stated on her Birth certificate. She was born in 1919 and her birth was registered on 23 October 1919. However in the section on the certificate for the Registrar's signature (" Witness My Hand This... Day... " )the date is 12 November 1919. On the back of the certificate in pencil is written " Record issued 13-11-19 ". Is it possible that when the birth was originally registered on 23 October 1919 the name of the father was given, but her mother changed her mind about this and a new certificate was issued ? If that was the case is there any way of finding out the father's name?

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Henry Webster & Agnes Walsh, 38 Morpeth Street
« on: Tuesday 27 November 12 11:35 GMT (UK)  »
My great-grandmother ( Agnes Walsh ) was born in Scotland and by the time of the 1911 census had been widowed. She also had a new partner by the time of the census ( Henry Webster ). He was born in 1853 and died in 1924.The 1911 census for Scotland records them both as living at 5a Montague St.in Edinburgh. He is described as a " Jeweller" and she as a "Boarding House Keeper". HOWEVER between 1911 and 1919 they moved to Newcastle upon Tyne. My mother ( Also called Agnes Walsh ) was born illegitimately in 1919 in Newcastle and she and my grandmother ( Isabella Walsh ) lived with Agnes Walsh Senior and Henry Webster at 38 Morpeth St. Spital Tongues.
During the First World War I feel that Henry may well have worked in the Tyneside shipyards as his death certificate records him as having been " A general labourer in Ordnanace Works ". What I should like would be if someone could do an electoral register check/ or street directory check for Newcastle for me and see what the earliest date is that he and Agnes are shown as living in Newcastle.

Many thanks,

Pirhana
