Lancashire / Parents of Richard Hill, b.1820, Lancaster. Who Were They?
« on: Saturday 16 May 15 12:50 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have reasonably definite information regarding the parents of Richard Hill who was born in Lancaster in approximately 1820 ? He worked initially as a whitesmith but after moving to Liverpool worked as a dock gate officer. He married Ann Perks in 1856 and when she died he married her sister Alice in 1873. The sisters were originally from Ulverston.

Surrey / Charles Victor Hill ( d.1942 ) and Mary Hill of Sutton
« on: Wednesday 13 May 15 20:12 BST (UK)  »
Charles Victor Hill was a seaman lost at sea in 1942 when the Cunarder " Laconia" was sunk by a U-boat in the Atlantic. Both he and his wife Mary were originally from Liverpool and were married there in 1925. They had three children- May ( b.1926 ), Norman ( b.1929 ) and Richard (b.1927 ). The Hills moved from Merseyside in approximately 1938/9 and settled in Sutton, I am told by an elderly relative, so that Charles could sail more easily from southern ports such as Southampton,etc.. I am also told that the house in which they lived in Sutton was named after their three children "Manorich". Unfortunately I have no idea of the postal address which is what I am really trying to find out. Does anyone have a street directory for the relevant period ( 1938-1942 ) or does anyone know anything more about any of the above people?

Many thanks,

A friend of mine recently had a holiday in Yorkshire and visited the Wensleydale Creamery. Knowing that the surname "Dinsdale"is one of my interests he sent me a picture of a cheese press made by an "M.Dinsdale - Hawes" which is in the Visitor Centre/ Museum. Although I don't live in Yorkshire I'm ashamed to say that although I've visited Hawes several times I haven't yet visited the Creamery. My great-great-grandfather was called Michael Dinsdale, was a blacksmith and lived all of his life in Hawes ( 1815-1882). I'd love to know whether it was made by him. I have emailed the Creamery and am waiting for a reply. I know it's a long shot and appreciate that its origin may not be known. Has anybody "out there" and particularly in North Yorkshire come across any other metal goods/ artifacts made by an "M.Dinsdale-Hawes"?

Denbighshire / Arthur Edward Hannen-Did the Family Run a Transport Business?
« on: Tuesday 27 May 14 12:23 BST (UK)  »
In 1924 Arthur ( Ted) Hannen married Dorothy Dinsdale, possibly in Colwyn Bay. Did he run or have connections with a local haulage/transport business? He is believed to have emigrated , but later returned to the UK and settled in the Eastbourne area.

I'm not sure whether this is the correct forum for questions regarding merchant seamen lost during WW2 , but anyway does anybody know of any memorials listing those seamen who lost their lives when the Laconia was sunk apart from the one at Tower Hill in London? As many of the crew came from Liverpool and North West England are there any elsewhere?

Lancashire / Margaret V.Ritson-was she baptised or married in a religious ceremony?
« on: Thursday 17 April 14 12:25 BST (UK)  »
Margaret V. Ritson was born in 1901 ( possibly in Toxteth Park ), although her birth wasn't registered ( according to BMD ) until 1930 possibly when she got married to Richard Hill ( possibly also in Toxteth Park ) . I can't find any record via Familysearch of a baptism and in view of the fact that the birth doesn't appear to have been registered for 30 years(!) her parents may not have had her baptised. Also, short of sending for a copy of her marriage certificate I'm not sure whether her wedding was a civil or religious one. Any information/suggestions gratefully received.

I know it's probably a long shot, but is anyone able to help me find out who one of my ancestors worked for or any of the vessels on which he sailed? He was Richard Hill and was born in August 1861 in Liverpool. His children's birth and marriage certificates as well as the 1911 census describe him variously as a "Purser's clerk", " Purser" and "Ship's storekeeper". He lived all of his life ( when not at sea ) in Liverpool. He had two sons who also went to sea, one of whom died when RMS Laconia was sunk, but I know about them. As his seafaring career was between about 1880 and 1920 it's proving much more difficult to find anything about him.

My great-grandfather was a seaman. On his children's birth certificates he is described as a purser or purser's clerk. On the 1911 census and his daughter's marriage certificate he is described as a ship's storekeeper. He and his wife and family lived all of their lives in Liverpool. Having said that I have absolutely no idea which shipping companies he worked for nor do I know the names of any ships on which he sailed.. Some Liverpool street directories just describe him as a mariner. Is there any possibility of finding which company( ies ) he worked for ?

Cheshire / Richard Henderson Hill, b.1900 Seacombe-Baptismal Records?
« on: Wednesday 02 April 14 16:02 BST (UK)  »
Richard Henderson Hill was born in Seacombe, Birkenhead in 1900.His parents were Richard and Annie Hill. His siblings Alice ( b.1890 ), Charles Victor ( b.1897 ), James Austin ( b.1904 ) and Samuel George ( b.1906 )were all born and baptised ( Alice and Charles Victor ) in Liverpool. I can find no details via LDS Baptismal Records of Richard Henderson Hill's baptism.Of course he may not have been baptised. Is anyone able to find any details for me ? Presumably if he was baptised in Seacombe or Birkenhead any records would now be kept in the Records Office in Chester ?
