Clever thinking Fifer....sounds logical to me at least  ;D

Annie

Thanks Annie, just thinking "outside the box" but only helps if it provides some answers!  ;D

Maybe now would be a good time in this thread to put it all together in a timeline?

This one 1871 & address should be checked against census if we have a specific date before census for Robt jnr's navy admission.

Just wondering if you noticed on Robert Mark Jnr admission in 1871 That his mother's name is down as Janet Black 104 Gerard Street. Also anothert relative is an aunt Mrs Rankin 19 Back Berry Street.
Cheers Sue

And this I agree is probably Janet Mark/s jnr and means her parents/brothers were likely working elsewhere. Helpful though since there may be other misheard "Marsh"s.

1861 Scotland census

James Hutton 1798 Hollywood, Dumfries
Mary Hutton(Smith) 1803 Kirkcudbright
James Hutton 1827 Kirkcudbright
Mary Hutton 1845 Kirkcudbright
Janet Marsh(?Marks) 1851 Liverpool Lancashire. Grand Daughter

Yep we need a timeline of known facts  :)

Tulliallan is in Kincardine in Fife [now] it may have been Clackmannanshire in 1831 but definitely not Kincardineshire

Post needs moved to appropriate board, have alerted mod.

Do you have any census data for Janet/Robert?

I don't have them together ever. I have them pre children separately & only post Roberts death with Janet as a widow.

All addresses on birth records are basements of houses in poor areas then after Robert snr dies eldest son Robert is signed up to the Indefatigable, James McCall Mark is with Janet until she dies and I have the same address on the Death Cert as last census in 1888 which is 65 Christian Street death certificate states she is the Widow of Robert Mark Painter and James was informant.

I have been stuck here for months and I have tried every subscribed site I can, bought all of the birth certificates and despite having new addresses they are never at the address at census time and just appear to vanish but I can't figure out if its my poor skill or they didn't want to be noticed fro whatever reason.

Sadly there is nobody living in that line that I can probe for clues I have literally spent days in research archives getting this far to have hit this wall. So frustrating!

OK this may be another wild goose chase for you but worth checking

1861 census Scotland - Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire has 2 hits for Robert Mark/Janet; by deduction one Janet appears to be 47 with an 11 yo Robert, so a bit too old. I haven't checked the other yet and have no credits. BUT it struck me that Robert may well have been a ships journeyman painter so would have gone where the work was ie always a port where there was ship building.

Adding the fact Robt jnr joins the navy ...........

Does that sound logical?

The names look a good match for children of the Janet Hutton bn 30 Sept Kirkcudbright to James and Mary Hutton.

Possibly the first son named for the father or paternal g/father?

It would be worthwhile contacting Mick Martin/the administrator/s of http://www.fifepits.co.uk/ for further help, the area you are looking for information on is "West Fife".

It would appear from the press snippets on site that there was a coal/ironstone depression which lead to large numbers of miners emigrating from West Fife to USA in 1867/1868.

This too from the same site, may shine a light on the movement of miners, from "Dunfermline Saturday Press" 23 April, 1864 TORRYBURN - THE VALLEYFIELD COALWORKS
We regret to state that, owing to some misunderstanding between the Carron Company and the proprietor of Valleyfield estate, the works recently commenced by the Company have been suspended." (c) Fife Pits Mick Martin
