Stirlingshire / Re: Haggs Cemetery

I'm afraid there's no such place as Haggs Cemetery.

The nearest cemetery to Haggs would be Denny, but there is/was umpteen Churchyards in-between the nearest of which would have been Dennyloanhead Churchyard.

Dennyloanhead Church is now flats and the few stones which still existed were re-arranged in the car-park. The Churchyard itself was cleared (I believe) in the 1960's, maybe 1970's.

Mansionhouse Drive will be Hallhill Road and I think the bus stop is directly outside the entrance. Just ask the bus driver - he/she will know. Make sure you tell him/her that it's Sandymount Cemetery and not Glenduffhill Cemetery which is about half a mile further along the same road (A Jewish Cemetery).

I have no idea how much the ticket will cost - I imagine no more than a few pounds at most.

Hello Joy,

Below is an aerial view of Sandymount and you'll see that Section R isn't really any closer to the pedestrian entrance on Hallhill Road or the vehicular one on Gartocher Terrace.

Sections R & S are together on the same 'block' as you'll see.

Once you reach the correct part of the cemetery, have a good look for any numbers you can find on the bases of any of the stones. Some will have numbers, others won't, but these will be the lair numbers and if you can find a few, you might be able to work out which ways the lairs run in each row.

Alternatively, visit the Commonwealth War Graves Site and look for any Commonwealth War Graves listed in Section R. With a bit of luck, one of them might have a number near'ish to the number of the lair you are looking for and it's much easier looking for one of these stones and make that your starting point.

See: http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead.aspx?cpage=1&sort=name&order=asc

The above link should take you to the first page for Sandymount.

On this CWGC database, rather than call a Section a Section, they are called Compartments, so any you come across in Section R, take a note of the details of a couple you think might be nearby then try and find them first as because they're so recogniseable, they're usually easily found. (The reference can also just be listed as R.9999 or whatever.)

Good Luck!

I don't know about Fintry Schools, but on your photo, I noticed what looked like an urn (above the first boy on the left's head) - the sort that sits on top of gravestones and that was what made me think it might have been a church.

Are you thinking that the building in the background is/was a church?

If so, then unfortunately, it's not Fintry Kirk.

Yes, as well as shouting on Mrs Bothwell next door, it did swear like a trooper!

I can tell you exactly where the Pollock stone is in old Monkland, so let me know when you plan to visit.

I've got Pollock as my middle name after my wee Granny.

Robert & Margaret had 10 children!! I found the attached amongst stuff I sent to Lesley Pollock (Bobby & Eleanor's daughter)
