The National Archives have records up to about 1923, and apparently the records for ratings who joined the navy after 1853 are easily located.

Hi Scatty,
Perhaps the 9yr old boy on the 1891 census was born to Mary Ann before she married James Donovan. The extra name Hines is probably his middle name, and possibly the maiden name of his mother. You could try searching for the 9yr olds birth under his mothers maiden name Cowell.

Hi Nicky, and thanks for the offer. I know Samuel and Nancy are Emilys parents, but I cant work out if she was born in 1867 or 1872. I really want to work back on the Beaumont line, but need to sort Emily out first before I can. Thanks for any help you can give.
